i discovered this not too long ago. but there seems to be no explanation on how to use it in the sonar help file... can someone explain the basic functions and usage of this thing? it seems like it can help my audio quality

thanks in advance

Just like a regular compressor, Control the ratio, attack and release. I can't really teach you all about compression here because it is a very vast subject and you have to learn a lot before putting your hands on the slider. Please read the other threads and articles regarding compression and get a good idea first, then you will be able to figure out how to use this in no time.

Jeyan is right, like most "simple" things in sound recording, the subject of compression is a collosus.

You might like to search this site for some great pro tips on compression:

Its worth bookmarking this site for some great articles on other problem areas like reverb and mastering etc.
Incidently, I worked alongside a very well known and published BBC trained recording "guru" last Saturday recording a live professional gig and he says that he "never" compresses  Says it "taints the sound"

Who am I to argue?
(depends if you want the sound that the "tainting" gives you ;) )

That compression is really a nice one. Not too hard on the CPU.

I am far from an expert, but I had some great results just using the presets that you can access at the top of the control window for the effect.

Pick a nice preset and tweak from there....

Hey, you're learning!

Hy Paul...that article really bothered me. I'm scared to think that the Trio can't hear anymore...or aren't listenting, or something. I know there's been a lot of garbage in their lives lately (man!), and I hope that's all it is...which sucks to say, but a fan is a fan, and I'm there for them

Indeed, I hope it's not even really, really there. Poof! You're a boogie! Nevermind...

I'l tap my heels three times. There's no place like home. There's not rush like rush. There's no place like home.

That would suck. Gotta buy it, and form my own opinion - cuz writing on the Net doesn't (oops I just fell down the stairs) count for crap. DOH! BIG...STAIR...BOOYYY!!!

O well.

Shawn:)

This shouldn't replace an RNC Compressor right? How often do you guys use the RNC? Only on vocals, etc? Is there any "compressor plugins" that are as good or better then the RNC? Thanks! Peter ><>

Threre are some great compression plug-ins that cost an arm and a leg that the pro's would use. Does that make them "better"? I don't think so. Its like everything, its not what you got, its the way you use it that counts.;)

Most people would compress at the Mastering stage to maximise the amplitude ceiling of the song.

thats a very subjective question but i can tell you that the compressorx is one of the better native compressors

No, not if you are using a compressor in your recording chain before A/D stage to not cause digital clipping, no.

Depends on what you mean by 'good'. There are compressors that 'colors' the sound when setup a certain way. For example, UREI1176 or LA-2A is this kind. They have their own cool sound. Then there are more transparent compressors. RNC is more of this latter type.

As a plug-in, I have not found CompressorX to be terribly good. I mainly use DB-AudioWare's compressors on Sonar because it is intuitive to use, and I actually like the sound in cases when a high compression ratio is applied to things like male vox. Also, DB-AudioWare compressor offers sidechain capability. While it's quite a bit clumsier to use than a real compressor with a parameteric EQ in sidechain, this gives you a whole world of option in applying really, really cool dynamics control.

(no association with DB-Audioware, UREI, Universal Audio or FMR. YMMV)
