Time to jump to PT?

I've been a dedicated Cool Edit Pro 2.0 user for several years. I really like the program, especially its wave editing features and track layout. However, I don't know anyone else using this program.

This month I've been helping lay down tracks at home for a friend's album which he's recording in ProTools (sharing wav files back and forth). Makes me wonder if it's worth trying to shift to ProTools myself. But my question is: is it really worth it to invest all the extra money in PT? For a simple home studio setup, would PT make a noticeable improvement over Cool Edit Pro? My bias is to say that the major room for improvement is not in my gear, but in my technique.
Any words of advice - I'm willing to be persuaded. is it worth it making the jump?
Cheers.
Drew.

I'd spend my money elsewhere, unless of course it gets to the point where it's very difficult to work with the people your working with.

I don't like Pro Tools at all because it's a Mac product ported to Windows. I tried out PT MPowered and was lost because it does not use Win features like Right mouse button. It just feels like a Mac tool through and through. Nothing wrong with that, I'm just mentioning what I think about it.

You won't get any better sound quality with PT. I'm assuming your talking about PT LE and not the high end PT with it's hardware.

I've downloaded the CE demo from Adobe and I think it's a good program.

Pro Tools LE is not expenxive..I'd argue its relatively pretty cheap.

A Digi002 rack coming with PTLE will run you about $1200.

A similar setup of a MOTU 896 and, say, Sonar5 will cost you $1200 for the hardware and another $500 for the software, $1700.

And you can still get into it with an M-Box for under $300 these days. Sounds like a value if you ask me. Alot of people seem to like PT better on Windows these days than on Macs even. Its a little different, yeah, but you have already seen the value of being able to share projects in different studios. If you ever get to the next level where you can do some work in a studio with Pro Tools HD, it makes it a breeze to go back and forth. That way you can get important stuff done in a good studio with a minimum of studio time$$.

me too

I also am thinking about making the jump to PT. I have freinds in the business that use PT and I cannot now or in the future share projects. I use Vegas which I am fond of. I cannot however make the jump to Macs....why? They ARE too expensive. My question then is if I am using Mpowered PT on windows can I trade projects with others that are running PT on Macs?

Yes you should have no problems trading back and forth.

If you need to use PT for practical reasons then go for it but if it's an increase in the quality of the end product you're after I'd spend the money on better converters, pres, mics, cables etc. pretty much anything else in fact! To me recording software is the least inportant link in the chain.
