Tell me how bad the mix is.
mix1

The bass is going to be redone.
How is the mix overall. What needs to be fixed.

Sounds a bit muddy. I'd like to hear the cymbals a bit more, and I think the bass is hiding the kick. Drums seem to be in the background a bit, overall. At about 1:50, when the kick is really rolling, I hear it, but it's got a sort of muted sound. Does that make sense? Decent guitar sound. The tone seems to fit the direction of the tune. I think getting the drums a bit more up front, and fixing the kick will really help.
Wish I had more specific things to point out, but everything I do is pretty much just experimentation.
And I really dig the tune overall. Has a great beat to it, and I think with that driving bass rythum, it is really cool. Not letting the bass sit behind everything and just thump root notes is great. I need to learn to play mine better. Is this you, or someone you recorded?

Thanks Dog.
Its my nephew's band.
What do you think of the bass, should it be redone with a different bass?
Also I had a hard time with the kick, The drummer dose not have a hole in the front head of the kick.

One suggestion - have the rythm guitar player double track his parts, and hard pan them.

Also, I agree with Dogman - it's a bit muddy.

:)

I like the bass myself. It might need some cleaning up eq wise, to sit better, but I like the tone. And not knowing much about drums, could you mic it from near teh front, or does that not work?
Anyway, hope this turns out for ya, as I like the basis.

Wow, just played it in my car.......muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuddddddddddd.
Did not sound that muddy in the basement.

Working on a new mix now.

Less beer, more ear....or, give the beer to me.... :D

OK, I think I fixed the mud.
Drums are out a little more.

What do you think Ed?

To me, the kick is still buried. Is it the same link? I just used the same link.
The kick is mushy. You may not be able to fix this. I put it in Sonar, and compressed the hell out of it, and never got the kick to be real good. The bass, and the snare and cymbals sit fine. When the kick is really going, it sounds better, but is not real thumpy. Better, but has no kick to it. With my limited knowledge, I can't bring it out. The fast drum parts make it sound better, but it's still hidden. You might have to eq the hell out of teh kick to seperate it from the bass. I played with eq a bit, and it seems as if you could boost teh drums in the 49-80 range, it might help the kick. Just my suggestion.

Sounds like it was a good performance. It's challenging carving EQ space for parts. Re levels, the snare's popping out a bit much in the current mix. Good guitar tone.

Just bumping this up to page one. I can't listen, I'm at work, but I didn't want Timboz post to die on page 87 before I have to go looking for it.

(I feel bad that I can't comment more often on people's tunes...I'm either at work with no speakers or at home working on something myself...I listen to almost everything, especially from the people I know...I don't always comment because I'm not that insightful and usually listen to the feel of the song as opposed to the technical merits...OK, just had to get that off my chest...I love you guys))

I am having a few listens, and I like the mix.

I don't care for the tone on the snare. It seems to be up front in the mix a tad too much, or perhaps that is just because I am not digging on the tone.

I have very little experience with the mix part, but gotta learn somehow!

I do love the kick, and the bass on this!

I think you have done a good job Tim.....TRUE :)

Its a good song, great playing.
But there is something wrong with the mix, its not bad but I would adjust it a bit.
I think the snare is bit to present, it also sounds as if its recorded somewere else than the rest. maybe som verb would do the the trick. also fatten it up a bit.
Some more highs on the bass gitar, give it some more prescense, abit more pluck and punch.
the bass drum is cool.

The guitars sound cool.

just my humble opinion

its a cool tune, just need some clearing up

It was recorded in one take.

Lead guitar direct in from line6 spider head.
R- guitar direct in from V-Amp.
Bass direct in from presonus tube pre.

I cant do much with the snare. The drums are just 2 o/h and a kick mic.
I had the toms and snare miced but did not use them in the mix.

If you can't fix the kick, get a sample to use. That will fix it...

The bass is too muffled, and lacks mid and high-end to get the sharp sound you are most likely looking for. The toms could probably loose some low end. I would turn up the guitar as well.
