I have been looking for a ride that does not have a lot of wash or overtones. I am looking for a "sweet" ping. I have been looking at Sabians (and listening to sound clips on their site.) Anyone have experience with either of these?

I wanted the same sound you are looking for a while back. I decided on a Zildjian 20" A Ping Ride. There is still quite a lot of overtones and white noise, so I use 1-2 Moongel dampening pads at various spots on the ride. The pads really help to cut down on those excessive back wash. Without spending 300 bucks or more, the 20" A Ping sounded best....but still wasn't really what I wanted. Good luck, it takes a lot of time and effort to figure this one out!

What style of music? You could check out the Paiste SIgnature Dry, Dry Crisp, or Dry Heavy Rides. I have a Dry Heavy, it still rings, but the ping is definately stronger than the wash. Or for lighter stuff, the Paiste Dark Energy Ride might be good. But those are more of a "tah" than a "ping". Mark ! is fairly dry. If worse comes to worse, you could try moongel or gaffers tape to cut some ring.

The 21" Sabian Dry Bell Ride is very nice. check it out

the AA tight ride is amazing as long as you don't need a huge bell, but it still has a small bell so you can do some work there, but there is no huge amount of ring after the cymbal is hit. Just remember that the smaller the bell on a ride means the cleaner it is going to be ie less wash. If you don't need a bell at all try a flat ride. That way you will have lots of ping hardly any wash.

You might also consider Zildjian K dry ride. It has a nice sized bell and the playability of it is more responsive than my other "washy" rides and it also sounds great live or recorded!

I tried a buddy's A Custom Ping Ride. I loved the ping, but it had a lot of wash! I play mostly "classic rock," and country, but also play with an acoustic electric group. I don't need anything super loud, just nice, sweet, and with no wash.

Well if thats the case I would go with the AA tight ride. I use it for the same application that you are describing.

The sound clips are pretty cool. There are none around here to try in person though. They are very reasonably priced--158.00 with free ship on ebay.

This is a very good question, . .good thread.

I actually, like a lot of ping without a whole lot of overtones too, .and for my ears the regular so called Zildjian 'ping' cymbals, have too mcuh of a stick click, rather than a ping . . .The 20" K Zildjian Dry ride, and the 21" Sabian Dry Bell Ride, . .are the only two ride that I found really work well for that musicla sounding ping sound, with very little wash. Now, I'm sure there are others, and other opinions, . .But, those two rides, have a really nice sounding ping with very little wash . . .

However, for my taste I have found that the Sabian works much better for live, and the K Zildjian ride works much better in the studio, .. The K Zildjian can be slightly too quiet for live situations, depending on the music. . .

Another option, that might be a happy medium between the two is the 21" Sabian HHX Groove ride, . this might give you the ping and volume that you need for both live and studio situations, . .and its also a bit brighter, . and a good choice for Funk/Rock, and R&B stuff. . .

If you want a "ping" then an Zildjain A Custom Ping Ride will be a good bet. Also, K's and K Customs make amazing cymbals. I just got back from guitar center and got myself a 16'' K Custom Session Crash. Try K's and K Customs out for sure.

Man, trust me on this one! I had been looking and looking for years to get that tight, non-ringy ride with barely any overtones at all and with a lot of clean sticking definition that projects itself throught the music....I found it.

SABIAN 20" HAND HAMMERED LEOPARD RIDE.

It's so heavy, and tight that you can't crash it what so ever (which basically means zero overtones).

The thing is, I stopped using it because I am now in a jazz band and I have no use for a ride like that anymore. I'm kinda pissed because those hand hammered cymbals are pretty pricey...I think I paid something laround $275 CDN for it.
I could sell it to you, I hate going through ebay because I've been ripped off too many times.

If you're interested in buying it you can email me at jay_the_drummer_2000@yahoo.com
