"Threadiquette" in the clinic?

Cool comments so far. Didn't start the thread to point at anyone, just thought it's an interesting subject.

I think one of the things that keeps the clinic interesting is its unpredictability.

Fascinating to discuss music and production when everyone's comments have an extra dimension because you know what they sound like themselves. And it's really helpful to get feedback on how something sounds on different systems.

When I listen to a tune that has something I like about it, and I don't have anything to say that hasn't been already said, I think it's good to post anyway just to reinforce the points said. If 3 people say, "too much verb" or "the tambourine doesn't fit" the ideas have a lot more weight. Also, if I just like something but don't really have anything I want to say about it, if I just say, "liked it", that's good too because it gets bumped to the top and another dozen listeners might get to hear it.

They really scare me :D

What ever happened to that guy? How many times did he meantion that he "wasn't going to let us down with the bombtrax!" I'm afraid he's let us down!

This forum rocks! I've learned so much here it's wild.
When reviewing music I'll think of how I'm hearing something that probably means a lot to somebody, and they put a lot into it. I always try to make any recommendations I can, and feel bad if I can't. Then I figure if I can't think of anything helpful to say I'd rather post a pat on the back then nothing at all so that the person will know there's one more person who dug the song.

Just a thought... like I know this one may not be for everyone, but personally I'd be interested in hearing from people who listen to a song and didn't like it. With the views/posts ratios, you can assume people come through and turn it off... I'd be interested in hearing what turned the person off about the song and where. I think of CDs I have now and how they always have songs I don't like at first, but sometimes grow on you. With so much to listen to here, it's probably a one shot deal sometimes. Although, that's probably offset somewhat due a person still being able to review a mix without totally digging the song.

Lol, I feel like I'm just blabbering now... anyway, nothing really bothers me around here. It's just too cool hanging out with fellow musicans who share the same passion. Good times :) :)

I'm just into the mp3 forum for the pure entertainment value of it all.

I'm not necessarily into nitpicking people's mixes, because I think e'one has their own way they'd like to hear the mix, including myself. Even my opinion of my own mixes changes over time. I'll only offer mix advice as constructive criticism if I think there's something that's really gone awry in the recording,... which is seldom, because most of you guys are turning out excellent stuff. No criticism necessary.

I'm also looking for some sort of excitement or spark in songs (recordings). Often I feel that a compelling performance may make up for fairly obvious flaws in the sound quality, or other technical aspect of the mix.

;)

That's all true, & there's always so much to say about e'thing.

Especially important is that it gives all the tech-chat about instruments and recording gear a foundation, reality check or whatever you want to call it, when you can hear some actual recordings by a member. It helps raise the quality of communication.

Just wanted to chime in and say how much I enjoy being a member on this forum.Have gotten some great advice/tips!I only wish I had more time to listen to all the great music on here...work,new baby etc., and my music time has been cut down drastically!
You guys rock!

Hi All,
If I recall properly, way back in the mists of January I think, I followed this thread for days before I dropped something in. By the time I made a comment & later dropped a song I had a fair clue about what goes on. I also dropped into other sections and was chased off a couple quick smart by some intolerance & uptightness.
It only took a couple of days to realise that songs, playing & mainly mixing & arrangements are what is commented on - alongside a few g'days & convivialities etc.
I've worked at producing better structures and mixes as a result of tuning & sometimes butting in. I've posted stuff for mix comments, been offered them & attempted to use what I've been told.
That's the point isn't it?
I've also found some bad, some OK, some good & some GREAT music.
In my reviews I've been terse, sometimes verbose (like now - who uses verbose?), occassionally belicose (sorry just had to throw something stupid in) - depends on me at the time really - BUT I try, following the example set by others to offer CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. As in all things the regulars/stayer/long term contributors make a thing what it is.
To summarise:
GOOD FORUM
OFTEN GOOD MUSIC
GENERALLY FAIR COMMENTS
I'll be buck - ya cannae be rid o'me.
Cheers

Anybody else enjoy listening to all the music in this clinic more than what's on the radio nowadays? They should have an mp3 clinic satellite radio :D

Yes, you hear such original music on here that you'd never hear on the radio. It's like going to all the tiny little clubs where you occasionally find a gem, without all the time and money spent. I've actually burned CDs of stuff I heard on here :)

Down with the music

I am definitely down with music posted on this forum. The amount of talent and orginality is inexhaustible. I guess a good visual would be walking down a street lined with music clubs, where ya can poke your head in and give a listen to whoever happens to be playing on the stage. From singer songwriter's with nothing but their voices and guitars, to all out metal bands thumping hard with that crazy double bass drum.

I never listen to the radio unless I am with someone who is doing it. I have many cd's full of music from here that I listen to all the time. Great stuff.

That's a cool idea, I should do that more. I did that once, burned a few songs from the clinic on the CD for a trip and left my comments when I got back.

Funny thing is, we'll be driving along, and I get the image of someone's avatar in my head when the song of theirs comes on. :D

That is a great idea Dog. I never listen to the radio either unless one of my kids are listening. In my van, I listen to Normans CDs and the Rumble one...man I love those...If anyone wants to send me a CD of there songs, I will listen..I will pay ya too, just tell me what ya want. I love listening to the original tunes. I would love to have a Headcutting CD...with the headcutting in full length songs though, or intertwined with the acoustic guitar headcutting, bass, and violin too.

Dude,... yeah!!!

And,... I'm gonna violate all threadiquette & take this thread way over the top!!

Ok,... I hardly listen to commercial radio or CDs lately, either. I'm SO hooked on the wild stuff at Soundclick! This is my fav-list of the best classic rock covers I've come across on Soundclick. Sorry to sound like a commercial, but it's the board I'm currently on, so it's what I listen to.

There's this great station, called davemania's station at:

http://www.soundclick.com/stations/stations.cfm?id=162306

I'm tellin'ya, it's great stuff! All home-recorded covers of classic rock songs. The page that features YOU,... all you rockin' party animals! This page does not feature me at all, so you know it's gotta be good! It features you, baby! Please give my friends a listen!!

Dang! Threadiquette is what you make of it. Opinion differs based mostly on people's temperment. See,... I don't think this post was really over the top, but in fact it's topical to the previous posts, and I sincerely hope u guyz have time to listen to my "station". I'm not featured there, so it's not for my own sake that I posted this link. Thanx! ;)

PS: Press the "hifi-shuffle" play!

Me too. I have CDs full.

And it raises this question for me: why should I pay some record company millions of bucks, when most of my favourite music these days comes from this kind of site, where people play and record music because they want to -- and THEY don't get paid zilch?

My favourite songs might be homerecordings and they might not have the schwam of the big expensive productions. But I don't seem to care about that. If the songs are great, and they can interact with my mood, what more could I want?

So why are record companies taking zillions of bucks and handing a small share out to those extremely lucky few?

We are all international buskers. So maybe we should all just have a virtual "Tips" hat for donations from those who like our songs enough to contribute. 10 cents every now and then from Brazil or the Faroe Islands would stoke my chute a zillion times more than a poxy record contract with some suits.

As for radio. You should try listening to the UK trollop!

I thought it would be proper "threadiquette" (heh) to let you know that, contrary to the above post, I recently added my entire setlist to "davemania's station" at Soundclick.

The main reason is that I'd been listening to "my station" so much, that there came a time when I wanted to hear my own cuts interspersed with all the other tunes, in random shuffle.

Previously, I was either listening to "davemania's station", or listening to my own mixes off my hard drive. I'd typically not sit on the web and stream my own tunz. At a certain point recently, I just wanted to mix it up. I also considered the hypothetical listener who might click on "davemania's station", wanting to hear "Davemania" tunz. I watch my stats at Soundclick, so I'll simply deduct the number of plays that I give myself, which seems kinda weird, on the face of it.

Hey, although I'm now featured on "davemania's station" (setlist), it doesn't primarily feature me, & this is not another clever attempt at self promotion.

"davemainia's station" on Soundclick is a hell of a lot of fun,... and you heard it here first!

That's my update.
