Thoughts on a live-recorded track

I did a "live" recording session of a local band called Blend, and this is the first track I've done a mix on. I say "live", because I was basically recording a practice session to get the band a demo CD. Everyone was all in the same room, and no more than 10 feet away from any other person, but I still got decent isolation on the tracks. Please ignore the vocal, as that was a scratch track and the real vocals will be recorded with a nice condenser at a later time.

Yes, there is a data error in the original track at 3:45. Through a strange series of events, my external hdd stopped working, so we tracked onto a hard disk mp3 player over USB2. Talk about fun. For the most part, the mp3 player did fine, but evidently glitched on this one spot.

Any thoughts on the mix/EQ/effects? I'm mixing in a new room, so I don't have a reference yet for how my monitors react here.

The lead guitar seems much brighter than the rest. I'm on cheapo headphones at work, so I'm not sure if the whole rythm need to be brighter, or the lead needs to be less bright...probably the former.

There also seems to be a edit skip at around 3:45...it sounds like a beat is missed...maybe it's just me.

lol ... yes there's something wrong at 3:45! Why didn't you mention that in your post? Just kidding. Obviously David didn't have time to read the whole thing! :)

I didn't know The Edge had a side project! Are the other U2 members cool with it? Seriously though ... I didn't think there was a problem with the brightness of the guitars. I thought they sounded pretty nice. My main problem was that the bass was muddy sounding and all-encompassing. Other than that, it was pretty decent for a live demo.

On a side note, just compositionally speaking, I didn't like the C-B chord move. I vote for D6 instead of B, but that's just me.

LOL...yeah, this song does kind of have that Edge tone in the guitar. This is just one of 6 tracks we got down, so I'm sure I'll put the others up here as they are mixed. Their style can vary quite a bit, but overall they are a very tight band regardless of what they are playing.

Thanks for the tip on the bass. Therein is part of my problem with the new room...I don't know how the bass reacts in there. I'll see if I can clean that up a bit.

Is that phase im hearing on the overheads?

\Or is because of the low KBPS. on the mp3?

Oh, im sure itll sound better once the vox are relayed too.

It's gotta be from the mp3 :( . I tracked at 48KHz, 24 bit and can't detect any phase in the overheads in the non-compressed mixdown. Thanks for the comment!
 
sounds a fuck of a lot better than most live recordings! good tune as well. my hat goes off to you as you really have done a good job at tracking and mixing this. vocal doesn't sound bad but if you're going to record it again anway, then i cant see why not.
