Not 100% sure, but most of the SM Pro Audio stuff is worse than your average behringer. If you need a multichannel compressor for mastering, but are not able/willing spend on bucks on the big boys than I'd recommend staying away from multi channel compressors all together. I've never needed one anyway.

hmmm

so what would you suggest if I would want to buy something that could tame a couple of channels in my mix?

Yup, stay away from SM(ut) gear. They're cheaper than Behringer and that's saying a lot!

What is your budget?

Dunno...about the same (300) I guess..depends...but I would like to have more than 2 channels...

just for taming some stuff here and there btw, no extreme stuff (still looking for a good hip hop drum comp, too though)

Mate, when your talking 300 dollars, you can forget about choices like color or no color. Get the best you can or get nothing at all. I doubt you could even find a decent stereo compressor other than the RNC in your price range. No offence, but "good" ain't happening on multiple channels.

EXCEPT for one product they make which I love - the M-Patch. It's a passive attenuator. Solid build, works great.

It is an optical compressor. It only lowers volume. How bad can it be?

it's not so much it's function, but what it adds or takes away from the signal. a great deal of budget gear will add unwanted artifacts, or just plain leave something to be desired. build quality is also an issue... will it last? will all of the channels be of equal quality? will they even work...

well, coloured... I heard that new really nice thing is gonna have a character sound to it...thats what I'm saying... also referring to my comment about drums.

I'm pretty sure the RNLA will be clean, but not as transparent as the RNC. There is a difference. I doubt it will be a distortion box or anything like that. It's a levelling amp, which is why I thought of it when you used the word "tame".

a little bit off-my-own-topic

but: any recommendations for a budget comp for fattening up drums? (coming outta my sp-12 an then going through my studiomaster analog desk, so I wanna insert that comp then)
