it's a shame that the "joke" isn't quite as funny when there's sensible logic at play. :p

Right here, and it's not a silly question. A figure 8 mic WILL sound darker off the back side BUT ONLY because you're listening to the sound thru headphones. On speakers, there's no difference. The reason has to do with combining the negative signal from the mic with the positive signal of your natural voice resonating in your ears. It cancels out the high end, but it's not recorded that way.

Record both sides of the mic and play it back; I doubt you'll hear much, if any, difference.

Unless, of course, it's a cheap Chinese figure 8 ribbon, in which there's rumored to be more foam on one side to reduce the risk of plosive damage, which means that while it's still a figure 8, it's a little squashed on one side.... :D

Unless the manufacturer physically does something to change the backside response (different internal mesh, foam, baffles, poor QC, etc.), the two sides of any figure 8 mic (condenser or ribbon) should be damn near identical.

That definately looks like a black Shure KSM32 to me. The blcak KSM32's are pretty common to be found in rental stock for companies that do live sound. I know that I have 4 of them in one of my mic packs.

maybe he is playing poprocks and coke then lol and cmon hes not exactly the worst guitarist lol

Don't ask me... if it smells like Green Day, sounds like Green Day, or looks like Green Day, I'm changing the channel/turning away.
