Getting a more "open" "airy" vocal sound may be as simple as using a setting between cardioid and Omni directional on my newly aquired Apex 460! :D All of my previous mics were cardioid, this one is the first with a variable pattern, who knew the key to that elusive sound [airy, open vocals] was as simple as "record more air along with your voice"? :o
 
I just point a fan at the mic while I sing. Makes my vox increadibly "airy". Just be carefull using a compressor with this technique. I had a hard drive explode from putting too much compressed air in it. ;)
