This is my buddy's Graphic Design/Multimedia web site.

Looking at his portfolio, looks good. I like the icons.

I'm also preparing to start doing some freelance web/graphic design and software development for some extra cash. Just started the website today in fact. Not to hijack the thread, but I'd appreciate it if you let me know what you think: www.dannydotguitar.com/digirev/ (just started on it).

love the website.. only the "dr" thing at the bottom seems a bit out of place.. i'd probably get rid of it entirely and you're set! good work

WRT your site.

1. Overall, it looks good. It looks too familiar, though. It almost has a "dashboard" look to it, like a hosting company would give you. It almost looks very Microsoft-ish...

2. The top blue bar. I'd make it not as thick. Maybe cut a third off the size vertically.

3. Your orange menu. I'd reduce the size of it, too. It would probably be better if you made the bar slightly larger than the letters themselves.

4. I'd move up "Graphics Portfolio". Take it where it is now, and the bottom of the menu and the top of the letters. Split that area in half, and move the "Graphics Portfolio" up.

5. I looked at your code. You took an interesting approach to coding the page.

Again, these are my opinions. Overall, though, it's a good start!

hrmm i never thought about microsoft until you mentioned this.. but now that you have i can't help but see it too... maybe it's the color scheme.. maybe change it up a little but not too much.. I still think it's extremly simple and straight to the point which i am very fond of.... I'm getting really really sick and tierd of all these shitty "flash" sites or sites that have so much going on i don't even know what's what.. simplicity people.. will always be timeless and will produce results... I still stand by my first comment.. you did some good work

oh and it's important to note that you can still be extremly creative and simple at the same time...that's more what i'm talking about

perfect example is in this thread.. look at the first website.. there's alot of good stuff but to me it seems to crowded.. a little confusing to navigate and not really consistant. Every link loads up with a different size.. the portfolio section is a nightmare (no offense) where did these butterflies all of a sudden come from.. how do i simply look at one example of work at a time?

now compare it to the 2nd website... if you look at the first one then the 2nd one immediatly you're eyes are saying "ahhh a breath of fresh air" it's the equivaltent to "ear fatigue" if you throw too many visuals at people. I'm not saying the 2nd one is perfect and the 1st one is shit.. not at all... it seems like the first graphic artist does have some serious talent (maybe web layouts just aren't his forte) that website just needs to be refined a little

Yeah, Danny did do a very, very good job of keeping it simple, but elegant.

Great advice mjr and thanks eeb.

I love simple designs, easy to navigate and very clean looking, also takes less time to load on slower connections.

I also like to keep the HTML real simple and do all visual styling with a CSS file.

Anyway, thanks for the advice and opinions.

i'm still a total newb with css/html.. i'm learning though.. damn schooling and them not teaching simple coding...it's absolutely essential in todays market.. graphic designs sorta have to be web designers to survive...at least where i live.. check out the beginnings of my site (not all the links are active yet and i'm rethinking the portfolio section i want to make it one piece of work at a time with a "back/next" button or something of that nature..

almost forgot the link

still have ALOT of work to do on this...... it's just trying to find the time (between work/wasting time on here ;)/ and maybe actually doing some recording i have 0 life

I like it. Logo looks nice. Menu is nice too, I like the font.

I'd consider not using bold font for the main content, although it does make it easier to read. And maybe left align it so it's closer to the menu.

As it is now, you have to look left to read the menu, then look right at the content. Not a big deal, just a suggestion. ;)

yeah I agree 100% hehe it's a little hard for me sometimes because i can make a layout 100% the way i want it graphically... but when it comes time to put it together with code my code skills aren't always up to par with what i want to accomplish.. I'm learning though :)

Here's a good site, then:

www.w3schools.com

That's got a lot of tutorials on it.

already ahead of ya! that's where i learnt how to do everything i know now (again i curse my school for not touching on this) I haven't gone through everything yet though ;)
