Like reverb, huh? :D

Best sound on this one's the vocal. :)

You know, I've been having a blast playing with Fruity, but I'm gonna give it some time before I commit to it on recordings. For one thing, it's s-o-o-o-o-o-o-o easy to put together a loop that works in about a minute or two. That means it's dime a dozen stuff before you begin. I mean, how do you put your stamp on it? I've got some ideas, but it's gonna be work...

To illustrate - I've been spending a bit of time at the Fruity Loops discussion board, and people post their stuff up there. A lot of it is REAL derivative. Much more original stuff going up here, I think.

Almost finally - I had an idea for a beat yesterday, and I couldn't even come close to putting it together in Fruity. In other words, it's great at supplying you with easy to put together Fruity bits, but it doesn't always serve your own ideas so well...

Finally, good work, though, Cyan - I liked your tune.

thanks drstawl and dobro for listening.

drstawl, thanks for the comment on the vocal being in-your-face.
I read somewhere that 8:1 compression will put anything IYF, and I have been using it ever since for stuff that doesnot need to much dynamic range or nuances.

Dobro, I am happy that you finally got to here it. I am actually just the recording and mix "engineer". The cats brought the files to me on fruityloops and I exported everything into logic and mixed there. I just added the vocals and effects

Tell me more about the reverb thing. Is it too much? If it is, its because I dont know how to use delay. I try to push back the sound into the room, but I never seem to get it. Maybe its cos I am using plugin reverbs.

Do you have a link to the fruity loops board? These guys have got me interested in the software. Say, is there anyway I can put sync info on it so that the bPM in logic will be the same as fruity. That way, I can do my arranging in Logic and add some sweetener in fruity

CyanJag, I downloaded 2 tunes:
korgloudas heck and highly intox, which I usually am.

Very confusing, are these two songs you? They sound very different.

As for highly intox, the recording sounds great. Nice and clear, I can hear every word, nice and clear. Sound quality gets an A plus.

I dont exactly understand the music, being a classical geek. Oh wait

I am actually just the recording and mix "engineer".
Didnt see that before. From a sonic viewpoint, it sounds great.
The "song" however, appears to be one measure of music repeated ad nauseum, with a fake piano and fake strings that are behind the beat due to the slow attack. The piano is obviously quantized.
I dont get it. I am not a poet, or a rapper, so maybe I have missed something in the meaning of the words, but all I heard is one measure of music repeated.

The latin tune, however, was great. You have actually taught me something, and I mean that: Synth Pianos suck! I keep using my JV 1010 as a piano, but I really have to get my real Piano tuned.

If you have anything else to check out, I will. You certainly know how to get a great sound. Peace, Dave

I get it now. These are clients. Sorry I didnt read more closely.
My bad.
I checked out caleb too. Nice song: for me, 44 seconds of guitar chords is a bit much to open a song, but that is me:rolleyes:
Brevity is wit.

"brevity is wit"

I love hearing people talk like that. It sounds really educated.

Wow, thanks for listening to three of my tunes. I like the songs but I am not especially proud of the mixes. I am just beginning to hear stuff, after a good year of trying, and still some things are invisible to me. I hear some peopl talking about gated reverb on the lead vocal. I've never heard that in my life.

Yes, These are clients/acquantances. I was just impressed that they could go from a beat to a fully mixed song in about 5 hours . They even wrote the rap while they were here.

I agree with you about the synth sounds. They can be cheesy at times but come in very handy since I dont have any real instrumentalists.

Thanks for the A-plus on the recording. That was my side of it.

such profanity... :)

Cool Cyan,

Not really my favourite style of music, But...

It's interesting, but as others said a bit repetitive. Got to have a change there.

Nice recording, clear enough. I find it a little dry though.

hey dobro...

How do you register with that fruity loops board? I can't find it anywhere.

Yeah- I ran into the same problem. Nothing on any of their pages about registering, just some clip of the front of each post and some funky message warning off unregistered users. I tried to get the free demo of FL3 at the CW site but they were "down" at the time.

Well, if you buy something from them and register it, you have access to the board. I paid $99 for the 'full' version. It's a lovely toy. You can get the lite version for $49. I opted for the full version because I want to be able to do chords.

Jeskola Buzz Tracker. Makes fruity seem like a toy, and it's free. However, no piano roll that I can see...major bummer.

Cyan, I think you did a pretty good job here of getting really nice clean vocals. The whole mix was a little dry though in my opinion, and the repetition didn't help. Also, the samples were a little sparse sounding. Aside from the nitpicking, I think you did a very nice job, especially considering the time frame!

CJ's bud is spot-on!

So, for some reason, Queue turns on MTV tonight...

On comes Busta' Rhymes' new video (I forget the title :()
Queue watches the whole thing (Busta always throws in some good booty shots ;))

Anyhow...
Same damn riff the whole way through the song....

They "sing" different "verses" and "choruses" and change up the vox, but the riff NEVER changed.

So, Queue's conclusion? CJ's friend is closer than we think.

Take this with a grain of salt, as I've been drinking, but emulation of pop flavor of the month is not a particularly vibrant measure of artisitic worth.

Do you measure what you listen to with your ears and heart, or with industry dollars?

Having said that, I don't see any reason why repetition of the same riff is necessarily a crummy thing to do in a song. I listened to Cyan's recording, and the repeating riff didn't bug me much.

dobro,

I was just following up on my comment (which was shared by a few others.)

..."Not my genre" and "riff doesn't change"...

CJ said that's pretty standard for this kind of music. My little anecdote showed that to be absolutely true.

That was the point of my "busta" post, but I'm sure it's meaning got lost somewhere between pages 1 and 2 on this thread....

or maybe in the bottom of your glass? ;)

Nice

Hello! You checked out my stuff so I checked out yours. I'm going to agree with the masses. Nice job!!! Lived in da dirty south for 3 years and will say that will pass!!!

Although I must also say that it would've REALLY kicked butt with some sort of change or break in is SOMEWHERE!!! But good nonetheless.

hey maya,

thanks for the listen and the nice comments. I am just waiting to get a good condenser mic to blow my sound UUUP!

And maybe , hopefully, a roland srv330 reverb.

What part of the south did you live in? THese guys dont really like the south style. They try to get away from it. I love the south style. You can jump to it.

TAAAMMMPPPAAA BAAAYYY!!, FL!!!

Home of Holly Rob and Dr. Ray (Let Me see you Squirrel). Loved it there so much even named my dog Buc after the Tampa Bay buccanneers. Currently freezing my a$$ off in Chicago. Hey! If those guyz are trying to GET AWAY from the down south thing...they did a HORRID job at it. CRAP!!! Why would you wanna get away. You tell them they betta put a hump in dey backs and jus' roooooolll!!!

Sorry. Had to go there. Best part of Down South. The $5.00 'rideout/jam pony express' ride out tapes you could get bootleg at the flea market. Those were the DAYS!!!!

Cool! I may have been listening to the wrong posts, but I haven't heard much rap out here -- "highly intoxicated" was a nice change of pace...

Though I'm listening on cpu speakers at a low volume (probably not appropriate music for work) ;) it sounds as tight as a lot of the pro stuff out there. The vocals are performed well, the tone is crisp and warm. I wish my vox sounded that solid... ;)

My only suggestion is more from a songwriting stand point. Something could be added musically to make the chorus stand out -- new sample, slight change-up on the rhythm, etc. I only recognized it as the chorus because I remembered the lyrics from earlier...

Since I've got no experience recording rap and only a little expereince listening to it, I don't have much else to offer in terms of advice/input. Sounded tight to me -- Keep it up.

Hey thanks maryslittlesecret, for the nice comments as well as the songwriting critique.

These guys did another song with me. It was the exact same thing. No differentiation from the chorus. If they come back to do another one or few, I am going to suggest some voicings for the chorus. Luckily, I found out that Fruityloops and logic time sync so I can add stuff from my jv1010.

I remember that you also use a shure sm for vocals. I ran this through mic modeller, but the second one we did was not passed through the modeller and it sounded even better. I did not even put any eq on it. It was about 6 inches from the mic, with a mad amount of compression.
