One Hit Wonder
Well let's try this one more time. Thanks to the generosity of WATYF our song is back online again. I must say I am continually amazed by this place called homerec.com. Not only is WATYF hosting the song on his site for me, but I had another offer to do the same thing from Emeric, and a wholehearted attempt by Muzeman to help out as well. This is truly a community, and I am honored and humbled to be a part of it.

For those who may have missed the previous 2 threads for this song ( ), it is a collaboration that features Steve Hutter (Lt Bob) on sax, and Chuck Umanita (ChuckU) on trumpets. My hats off to both these guys for their talent, and for their willingness to participate in the project (of course, they were handsomely paid for their efforts :) ).

The song is a cover of How "Bout Us originally done by Champagne in 1981.

I would be most grateful for any and all suggestions on the mix. I have really struggled with this song - for reasons still unknown to me. It's getting close to what I want, but not fully there yet. Thanks in advance for listening.

And props to WATYF, Lt. Bob, ChuckU, Emeric, and Muzeman. You guys are all great.

I think if you click on the above link the song will play. If you want to download it, right click and choose Save Target As. WATYF says the connection might not be lightning fast, but it should get the job done. (And it's certainly better than me playing it over the phone for everyone - which seemed to be my last alternative.)

There's something funny with that MP3, Dac. It was only 1 kb...

Oh... I see. It's streaming only... :p

Sounds pretty damn good to me! :)

But what snare is that?

And the brass sounded somewhat synthetic (not that I could do it any better).

Is that you singing? Damn, that was a good voice!

Hmmmm.... looks like you can't download it. When I tried to do a "Save Target As" it wants to save it as an HTML file rather than an .mp3 file. Maybe WATYF can explain.

In the meantime, if you left click on it, it appears to play OK.

sounds like everybodys doing their instruments very well.. you guys all play great! vocals are cool. Lt. Bob always jams on the sax!
the horns need about 5 db off them when their out in the open.
the timing was drifting a little on the bass.. and horns were a little off-sync'd on the up beats in the beggining.
the drums sound like the drumkit from hell samples :) cool!

awsome stuff guys... enjoyed this! thanks!

er....

actually... I have no idea why it's doing that....

but admittedly... I called home and had my not-so-computer-literate wife put it up on the server,...

soooo....

I'm just gonna go ahead and blame this one on her.

:D

WATYF

alright... I guess it wasn't my wife's fault... :p

I PM'ed you a new link... the other one was using forwarding, so it forced the download as an html file.

man.... the forces of the universe are workin' against you on this one... can anything else possibly go wrong? :p

WATYF
LOL. Man, have you got that right! I call it the Dachay2tnr Factor. Hang around me long enough and you'll know what I mean.

Well, thanks to WATYF the above link should now work for downloading. Just right click on it and choose Save Target As and you (hopefully) will be in business. (btw, WATYF, you have my permission to continue to blame it on the wife).

moskus - 3 live trumpets and 3 live saxes, and I get "the horns sound like synths." Can't I catch a break here < shakes head >. And no, that's not me singing - except for one of the background harmony parts. Thanks for checking it out.

Jmarcomb - thanks for the comments. Lt Bob makes this tune, doesn't he? BTW, I may PM you about some comments you made regarding rolling off low EQ on the reverbs. I think that could help this song. I want to increase the reverb on it, but this mix muddies up real fast. Your tip sounded like it might be the ticket.

Wow!
If you can make this better that's like splitting atoms!Well maybe not quite:rolleyes:

Acidrock - thanks for the listen and the hyperbole (go look it up :) ). I'm still looking to see one of your tunes around these here parts.

Hey D,
wow, very nice man. ...especially impressed w/ the vocals. ...very clean and well performed. Those bg vocs are sweeeeeeeeet and lush! I read above that you want to put more verb in there. Im not sure I would agree w/ that, but i suppose thats preference. I like the verb usage the way it is. The recording feels like it has soo much space in it, and i really like that. It seems like using much more verb would cloud that up a bit..... just mho. Nice horns in this for sure. I dont hear the horns being too hot as jeff mentioned, but im listening here at work, so my listening source definitely has to be taken into consideration. The little percussive sound (woodblock??) during the chorus did strike me as a touch loud though.
Very very nice stuff D.

Ah Champaign

You have brought back a lot of memories with this tune.

I got to watch these guys do this live.
This was one of my favorite albums at the time. This song was
my favorite on the album. But the whole album is good.
I was in High school with the keyboard player Michael Day but he was in a differant band than I was. That was in the late 60,s.
From what I can remember from then Michael Day and his brother
where kicked out of high school for having long hair.
And took the city to court to get back in school and won.
So anyway after that the school could no longer tell people how long they could where their hair.
And Mikes brother went back to school but Mike never did after winning the case and made a carrer in music.
I dont know what happen to him after Champaign broke up though.

Nice version sounds like you put alot of work into making it sound
like the original.

I still have that album but no turntable, Going to have to get one
some day so I can get some of those great albums out and listen
to them.

One other thing its great to hear something with some harmonies
on it, something you dont hear much of anymore.
And I dont think I would change anything sound real close to the original to me.

Man, tough getting a seat at the table these days. Go away for a few hours and you're buried at the bottom of page 2. :)

G-Man, as always I appreciate your comments. I'm not sure about the verb myself, but there's still something just not sounding right to my ears on this. All the mixes I've done seem to end up either cloudy or harsh or weak or... something. It's getting closer each mix, but boy has the process been long and tedious for what should be a fairly simple song. Thanks for stopping by and congrats again on the little one.

Herm - I don't know much about the group. I'm guessing though, seeing your location, that they must be from Illinois and probably took their name from the town, Champagne. I always liked this song, though. I'm a sucker for harmony, and they had a very nice sound. Thanks for checking it out. BTW, was the group white or black (or mixed)? They have a real "soul" sound to them, but I'm guessing they're white.

The lead singer and back up singer was black and the rest where
white.

Since i posted last I found out that mike day that played some keys on the song was also playing some guitar.
He lives in Urbana Illinois now which is a sister city of Chanpaign.
actually they are connected.
I can tell you have a copy of the song but have you heard the whole album?

If not I would send you copy of it If i can find a turntable to transfere it to cd.

From what i can remember of the song the only thing that sticks out for me on your mix is maybe add a little reverb to the vocal
and turn the vocal part down just a little.
It been a while since i heard the album but the only reason i say to turn the vocals down just a little is cause on my monitors vocals
always end up being way up front when i listen back on other
systems so they do sound a little to far up front on my system hear which means they may be a little loud.
other than than that good job.
Other than that the only other conplaint is the singer him self.
Not that he is doing a bad job its just cause Im used to hearing
plaulie carmmen from champaign do the song.
Again great production it must have been a bitch getting everyone to do their parts as close to the original as what
you got for this tune.

Actually I haven't heard the whole album. Just this song. I think I saw that Amazon had a CD of the group - maybe I'll pick it up.

It figures that the lead singer was black. Our guy did a decent job on it, I think, but he's a really white, white man.

Thanks again for the feedback, Herm, and for the history lesson on Champagne. :)

I wondered which light pole you were gonna tack this one up on. I been chasing it all over town. :)
Mucho Kudos to all the guys, this was a very smooth production on all counts.

Great production! Tight harmonies! That peeeeeeeo-ple vocal at 3:04 still cracks me up....:D (not necessarily a bad thing)

But what's up with the 'beep-tambourine' part on the right? (starts in the middle of the song) Why did you mix it so damn loud? Makes me sing along with it...and that can't be right. ;)

'beep.........trrrrk........beep..........trrrrk'

LOL.

Well it's like, you see, ah the tamborene is out of time with the music. So I wanted to make sure everyone knew that I knew it was out of time and so I deliberately mixed it real loud. And then. . .

Aaaah, who knows why it's loud. It just is.

Toki - thanks for checking it out. I don't know if you realized it or not, but I took your advice from the original post of this song and changed the bass tone. Thanks. :)

Hey, I'm up again! :D

Hell, I'm a lucky guy to get to play on all the stuff I get to play on.
I don't want to take credit for anything much since all I did was play on some good tracks that other folks recorded. I mean, when the bedtrack's there; it's easy and these were pretty nice tracks. Vocal parts like these don't just fall into the recorder.

So props to Mike for doing such a good job on this tune.....it was a pleasure to play on and did I mention it was easy?
I'll happily play on tracks like these anytime.

Memories... I think our son may have been conceived to this song.

Sorry, TMI.

Anyhow, excellent recording. I would've mixed the background vocals back more, if only to deemphasize some of the corny lines ("superstar, but he didn't get far" - oops, wrong track). And I made the same mistake with the horn stabs - thought they sounded like synths. I'll take a guess as to why - were the saxes and trumpets playing the same notes? Generally r&b horns, you've got 3 voices with at least two different timbres, often 3 (trombone, sax, trumpet), so you have a different voice TYPE on each note. Most synth horn patches get two or three horns on the same note, then a keyboardist plays them as a closed triad...

So if your saxes are playing a closed triad, and your trumpets are playing the same closed triad, bingo - instant synth horns, no matter how live they really were. Btw, the held-out chords did not have that problem - very nice.

And Bob, that was some sweet, sweet sax work. Oooh.

And that WAS one white-ass singer. Red hair and freckles, too, I bet...:D

Thanks for a beautiful tune, and an excellent recording.
