I currently have M audios bx5as ( http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=603707V ), lately I have been noticing that I seem to be getting cleaner mixes out of my surround sound speakers ( Logitech g51). Been thinking that the M-audios just aren't powerful enough for my usual heavy bass beats. Before i decided on anything I to do, I wanted a few opinions from people who know more then i do. So far my solution is to upgrade to 8' monitors. Thanks for any advice.

I'd guess that your problem lies in the mix based on what you're saying.. I think a lot of people tend to exagerate the low end when using monitors.. That to me is why you're getting better results with your surround sound.. your mixing on more common speakers for budget friendly consumer use and when mixed to sound good on those I'm guessing that you're forced to cut your low end so that your bass doesn't clip those speakers and override everything else..

Using monitors you're able to push that bass without facing the consequences of the low end being too heavy.. sounds fine in the studio.. until you play it in the car, or a more common home stereo setup and the bass is drowning out the vox and other instruments..

I think going to 8" will be helpful.. it should give you more response on the bottom end to help reach a better balance.. You might look at the Event line.. fair price for good monitors.. Maybe throw in a sub to help you account more accuarately for the low end.. so much low end is added in car stereos, clubs, surround sound.. etc.. you don't need near as much as you think in the mix.. at least that's what I've found in my experience. But, maybe i'm off the mark.. just my two pennies. Best of luck!

When your mixing, the main factor is to mix it for all sound systems including mono. So, then you need to think.. 1. Why would you mix something with exagerated lows? - remember all sound systems do not have 12" woofers
2. Mixing in Surround will cause problems later on in many different systems. Some of your sounds WILL be lost in the typical stereo systems. Left/Right. If you want to, you can mix a set of rear left/ rear right 180 degrees out of phase for 4 speaker sets, like ones in many cars.. unless they're all driving Benz's with 6.1 in the car. 3. An investment in monitors 8" etc would be good, you will then hear all the nucense (spelling??) of your audio, allowing for a cleaner sound, after you clean it up that is...
And yeah, you have to remember that the typical consumer system, the listener will tend to add treble & bass either way, so what is the typical frequencies average factory crossovers blah blah blah. Just factor in almost everything. btw, even the bx8's will do you justice, their aplenty in many pro studios out there.

to be continued.... phone call
