Hi all,

In a burst of energy, I rerecorded all the tracks to "Things You Have to Keep" today.

I added a lead guitar throughout and sped it up some. I also dropped the AM radio voice after the first verse. The mix is still rough, but I have little clue as to what I'm doing -- there's so many knobs! (Slowly, very slowly, I'm learning -- today, I figured out how to greatly decrease the MP3 size -- hooray for me.) :D

the vocals are clipping like mad. check out your vocal levels.

its hard to listen to....... i cant concentrate on your other tracks with the screeching/clipping vocals

yours changes seem fine... musically you have talent .. work on the mix a little bit.
 
How do I get rid of the clipping w/out decreasing the volume?

Sing louder?
 
It sounds like the drums are underneath the guitar, there is so much more high end in the guitar than cymbals. Try to have the two mix more together like
Cymbals - High end
Guitar - between, cymbals and bass with a hole for snare drum and vocals
Bass - leaving room for bass drum but still driving low end, i think the cut off point is like 90hz there, depending on the bass tone, the other holes in the guitar depend on the vocal and snare sound

Look at the sound wave when you record it and make sure you dont go over the 0 db... simple

if your sound stinks you might need a good mic and preamp

now try adding something to the vocals to make them stand out.

some reverb....

double up your vocal lines in the begining with the filter.
 
KingstonRock nailed it. Listen to that man. Otherwise the lead guitar doesn't sound like part of the song.

you should redo the clipping vocal (at least in the first verse), it really distracts/hurts when I am trying to concentrate on this piece. Maybe try pannning the lead guitar a little off center, too. The sharp guitar and the clipping vocal in dead center can get a little nasty....

I like the rhythem guitar and drum, I think they fit pretty well.

The best way to fix the vocal clipping might be to just retrack it. But you might want to experiment to see if compression can fix it. You might get lucky.

I think the EQ advice was right on. I was having trouble making out the words because so much else was going on with the instruments in that space.

Double tracking the vocals and maybe adding some harmony parts would make this a nicer piece.

As mentioned, there are a couple of pitch issues on the lead guit.

the vocals are clipping.. crackle....damn dude, I am suprised you didnt hear that.. It is most obvious on the beginning part with the effect.. I dont hear it on the other parts without the vocal effects, but the beginning was enough for me to lower it... Now when the effecty vocal comes back in the clipping starts again.. It gets really bad after the 3 minute mark..

The clipping is in the effecty vocal parts, it made an otherwise cool tune unlistenable for me.. I'll check it out again after you fix it..

Trip- I wanted to keep the AM radio voice, but I can't seem to lessen the harshness, so I'll take your advice and re-record this track. When you say "so much else was going on with the instruments in that space", do you mean in that section of the song, or in that frequency range, as Kingston seems to suggest?

J- not going above 0 dB is so simple -- as you can see, I really have a lot of learning to do. :rolleyes: As for reverb, whenever I add any, it sounds so fake (nTrack, amp, either way...maybe a very small amount?)

AL - What will "pannning the lead guitar a little off center" do? Please excuse my ignorance!

Thanks again -- since the general consensus is that it's a cool tune (and I have to agree;) ), I'll definitely keep working on it!

i am listening as i am typing right now.
the lead guitar at about 30 secs, the bending sounds a bit off, maybe you should try to bend more.
Panning the lead guitar off center can sometimes prevent the vocal and guitar fighting for space if they were playing at the same time cuz they are sharing lots of the mid range on in the EQ spectrum. A good way to start about panning is to draw a little diagram of the stage in your head, then pan things accordingly. For example, lead guitarist on far right of the stage, vocal in center, ryhthm guitar guitarist on the left side of the vocal, keyboard player behind and a little to the left of the ryhthm player, then drummer behind vocal.
To achieve the "behind" feeling, try adding some reverb/delay or cut some mids. However, I wouldn't mess with drums.
Just an example, there are no definite way of doing this.

About the clipping vocal, when you record, watch the meter carefully on your mixer, software and whatever processor you are running thru, and make sure that the loudest part doesn't exceed, say, -7dB, to be safe. Then you can bring the volume up druing recording as loud as you may.

All these are just my opinion, my taste. So, experiment around for your own likes. Good luck :)

Just finished listenning to your tune. I like the tune; I especially like the bass & drums. That said, I'll get to the negatives:

As has been stated earlier, the vocals need work. I do like the sound of your voice, it really fits the song. I can't understand the vocals with the effects added, although I did like the sound of the second one (begins about 2:50), it seems to fit there. The vocals need to be brought more to the front. I think that one source of the vocal clipping is not backing off the mic when the dynamics increase. You either have to do this or use on outboard compressor.

I liked the general sound of the lead guitar, but the timing is off at places (the openning lick and others) and sometimes the notes don't fit. From what I did hear of your playing, you should be capable of able to iron it out and lay down a good sounding lead part. It didn't sound like you can't play, just that you need to listen a little more. You might want to break it up and do punch ins. There's nothing wrong with that, the pros do it all the time. Don't think you have to do it in one take beginning to end. It's the finished product that counts, not how it did it.

Once you work the kinks out, I think you'll have a really good song. I'd like to hear it when you get it finished. ;)

I meant many things going on in the frequency range. Sorry for being unclear.

Listenned to your latest "things" and you are getting there. Shows good progress from the last mix I listenned to. Vocal sounds much better. I like your voice, fits the song well.
