I CAN SMELL EM!
In 1981 my father gave me his credit card number so I could mail order my first "real" guitar. After spending months looking in music stores and going through catalogs I finally figured out
which guitar I wanted…

It was a beautiful DC-200 Hawaiian Koa! I ordered it with all conceivable options available. Gold hardware, Pearl block inlays, ¼” thick ebony finger board… I went all out.

The guitar cost me back then $1,200. I was working part time in a boat factory here in Florida in order to pay for it.. (I was 16)

I’ll never forget the day I received it. The UPS guy walked up and I ran towards the door nearly tackling my mom on the way there. I opened the box,, the case,,, then I saw it! Man it was
beautiful!!!! I picked it up and it played even better than it looked. I was in love…..

Needless to say that throughout the years I’ve owned a lot of guitars. Everything from Les Pauls to Strats, But none of them ever came close to my Carvin. It was the guitar that I would tell everyone “hell, I’ll never get rid of this guitar”. :(

Yesterday, it was stolen…..
From my church of all places!
One of the workers let in some guy that said he wanted to pray and the bastard ran out with my Carvin. I got the call at 9:00 PM…. Man I’m so damn pissed and upset… I usually play my Strat at church but it just so happens that I was changing the strings. :(

The guitar has been with me for 21 years. The instrument can be replaced,.. But the memories, the good times (and bad times) I had with it cannot.

Sorry for the rant guys, but this was the only place that I knew there would be people that would understand.

Peace
Serge………….

Shit, that really sucks. Wish I knew what to say. Guess there's no chance of getting it back. And like an old friend or a love it can't be replaced.

That's rough. Sorry for your loss. I've had guitars stolen and it's like someone has taken away part of your ability to communicate.

Guess there's no chance of getting it back.

Yeah, It'll probably end up in some pawn shop...
Just hope I don't see it. I'll probably go postal.

it's like someone has taken away part of your ability to communicate.

Thats exactly right bird.
Never thought of it like that, but it's true.

First thing, did you file a police report, and did you give them the serial number? Believe it or not, pawn shops do report all serial numbers to the cops, and if it does show up in a pawn shop you might get it back.

Unfortuneatly, most stolen stuff doesnt go to pawn shops because of this....

Sorry for your loss

I trust you've filed a police report and have a case number, pawn shops will run a check and most music stores do also. Do you have a good discription of this guy? The cops may know him and his habits......not they'll do anything about it, they're too busy, but it could be useful information for you. If there's a fence involved your guitar is history, if not, you've got a chance at recovery. Often it will be traded for money already owed; drugs, a bar tab at a mom & pop bar, auto repair, etc.

With a reward, a lot of footwork, and a little luck you may recover your guitar.

In one theft of multipule instruments in '81 I found the thief, in another in '86 I found the fence, but just two guitars.

There's hope.

Eyes, you have my deepest sympathy. This is very sad news indeed, and always is the most heart-wrenching when it's something close to you that you've had for a while. More so when mom and dad were involved in the purchase. Like stealing a family heirloom.

Please keep checking the local pawn shops, but do it without tipping your hand as to your motive. This jerk stole it for the $$$ and he's gonna fence it soon somehow.

Rest assured that the community here, even those of us that are newbies and don't know you, is behind you with our support. Best of luck on recovering your baby.

Christine

sorry to hear about your loss. my deepest sympathies in your time of berevement. i have yet to lose a guitar, but i've had just about everything else ripped off at one time or another. if you can afford it, get a new one and fall in love all over again.

In '86 somebody smashed out my window in my car and stole my baseball glove that my dad gave me in high school ('75).

I'm still pissed off...

Thanks!
You guys are the best.

JR,...
I think I'll take your advise, I'll narrow my choices to 3 then
I'll post them to see what you guys think.

A band that played before us almost left with 2 of my basses in their van (an Alembic 6 string and Kubicki X -factor). I caught them just in time. They said it was an accident since my cases look like thiers (except for my name on them of course!). I was so mad but I had to hop on stage and play so I couldn't do much besides grab them and run back to the club. Perhaps it was better that way. I thank Jesus everytime i think about it.

I am sorry about your loss.

clif

Clif, I was definitely better that way.
Last nite when I found out about the theft, I went out in my truck
around the neiborhood looking for the SOB.
I think if I would have found him I would have cracked his head with the tire jack. (after getting my guitar back)

Gotta remember never to act on a hot head.
And man, was my head HOT!

I'd like to add my regrets!!!!! Anytime a piece of gear is ripped off it sucks, but it sounds like a lot of history with that guitar.

Hopefully there's a special place in Hell waiting for the guy!

Besides feelin' your pain, here's some advice!
Crack-hedz and their ilk that rob from churches are in dire need of fast cash , therefore are quik to sell their stolen property!.
Yo' eyez, keep your eyez open and investigate ALL PAWN SHOPS in your area and surrounding towns. Start making some "HAVE YOU SEEN MY GUITAR"-type flyers and send them out to all pawnshops, musical instrument retailers and used/new trade-in shops that specialize in buying used gear. DO NOT POST your flyers in public spaces, stores, light and traffic poles so as not to indicate how valuable your guitar is. Place adds in your local music rags.Inform all owners/managers of music venues such as clubs, bar/restaurants and theaters of your lost. Pass the word around to musicians on the local scene and if possible, give the "street peeps" a holla' about your lossin case they might turn up sumthin'!
If and WHEN you find the mutha'f#cka' who stole your sh#t, give ME a holla and my 4 brutha's and I will come down to facilitate an extreme beatdown (providin' you give us a hot meal!!
 ;) ).

Good Luck Home-boy!!

Sorry for your loss...
I've gotta say the above mentioned idea to file a report so the pawn shops can be aware of guitar is a good idea, I haven't had anything like that stolen but my bass player's first bass was stolen from his car while unloading his amp...right behind his back, I remember the blank, disgusted and confused stare that followed him for some days. He reported it and it has not been found, I hope you have better luck.
He did as JR mentioned, although it was no great bass and he had others he went out after his period of mourning and bought another P Bass. It did make him feel a little better.
Good Luck

I HAVE THE SAME MODEL, SAME YEAR !

i got mine in 1981.....

i was on the road, in greenville south carolina, gigging.....

i ordered mine, and when it was time to get it, i had it shipped to the hotel i was staying in.

i loved it, except the neck was a little boxy for my taste, so i decided to keep it, and took it up the road to Zion Guitars (remember the Zion model that Ty Tabor used to play?)
and i had them shave the neck for me..... they did, refinished it, and now, in 2004, it's still my main guitar.

it has a Kahler tremelo on it, which i have finally maxed out.

i've got to decide whether or not i want to shell out for a new Kahler ($289).........

but if i did, i'm sure it'd keep kicking for another 23 years.....

i eventually took the black knobs off of it, took out the stereo wiring and the tone controls, and put in a duncan custom in the rear, though i still have the stock neck pickup......

i use chrome knurled knobs on 2 volume pots now....

Gonz,... I would love to see it.
Do you have a pict you can post?

Mine was still completely stock, except for new gold plated knurled knobs, a fresh new set of gold Schallers and a custom truss rod cover.

Shit, I still recall almost every damn scratch on it. Every f_cken ding...
