Very good song. Strong vocals for sure.
I found the overall tone to be dull. It needs the EQ bumped up a bit maybe up around 8-12k; somewhere around there. Cool bass part and I didn't find the bass too loud as much as I found the guitars to be a little low.
I would like to hear some harmonies and there are a few minor pitch issues in the vox.
This is good work and a very worthwhile song that you should pursue some more.

Sennheiser,

That "voice" is only 18 yrs old and has had minimal training. It also belongs to the songwriter..............don't it make ya green with envy:rolleyes:

ChrisH............Thankyou :)

Lt Bob,

The harmonies are already tracked.....:)

Oh man, what a bass line! :D ANd your vocals are excellent, this is a great performance by your band. Real talent we're hearing here. The dynamics between the verse and the chorus are really excellent!

The kick and snare are mixed too low. It became ok only at 1:20, but still sounded very boxy.

Bass perhaps needs a tad compression like at 3:10 when it becomes suddenly really loud.

Nought else!

cheers!

I wish I could sing that well....................but I can't. Guess that's why I'm sitting behind a console these days leaving the playing to my son and the band.

Hey : I enjoyed that! :) Though the mp3 seemed just a bit muffled esp the drums. also I hear some great opportunities to add stereo tricks as is it was all "very centered". You call this a scratch mix? Im trying to get a final sound as good and not getting anywhere near what you have right here already.. dont forget to post the final,, thanks for sharing

Peace, Bill

Streaming from nowhere has been hit or miss for me....today a miss..can you enable the download link please???

Hiya Slack,

Being as "technically challenged" as I am, could you please explain.

BTW, I may (repeat "may") be submitting something from the son's band for the comp CD..............it all depends on the guys when I get a chance to ask them.

Cool tune !!! It really grabbed my attention. Very haunting.

If I ask a question you've already answered, I apologize. I like to post before I read.

I like the effect at the beginning - "garage band hiss", then cut to clean recording. Leave it - even if it wasn't intentional. It's a great contrast to the acoustic guitar - who's sound I liked. BTW, how about some details on the acoustic - brand, strings, mic set-up, mic, eq.

Also, what's the electric in the background? Are you using a "wah-wah" or some type of preset effect. I'm reminded a little bit of "Shaft" (LOL)

Good singer. Would like to hear some bg vocals.

One thing that jumped out at me was it seemed the mix was panned to the right ... a lot. Just me? If not, I'd look to bring it back to center a tad.

"verse drums" need to come up a ton in my opinion.
Tracks need some compression too.

Looking forward to the final.

hilights of this are your voice and the bass guitar. very good voice.

bass drum is blowing my home stereo speakers. watch out for that. guitars sound real thin.

you know what? i like the reverb on your voice in this. what is it? i never like reverb.

v-drums can be a bitch to get to sound good. i have em and i'm struggling a lot. dres usually can get some good sounds out of them though. maybe he'll check in with some comments. i know that the effects on the modules are really bad so i run them dry lately and mess around with them once there on there own tracks. but i usually wind up using samples in the end anyway.

thanks for posting. i look forward to more from you.

bpoco and eric, and others,

Guys, thanks heaps for the comments, they are really appreciated. Funny thing is that I had intended to rake that track off NWR a couple of weeks ago in preparation for uploading the final version of this song, plus a couple of other songs..........we have been working on 5 songs in total for the bands demo.

I repeat........this track (except for drums) has been totally re-recorded as this was only a rushed scratch job which is why I didn't keep acurate records of gear, etc.

OK, to answer some questions in no particular order :) ...........

Firstly.......IT IS NOT ME singing. The singer/songwriter is an 18 yr old "talent".

The acoustic is an Australian made Maton (available in the uS through www.americanmusicimporters.com). I'm not sure of the specific model as between my son, myself and the guys in the band, we have quite a range and I don't recall which one was used on those tracks. It would be strung with D'Addario EJ16's.

Micing was probably a blend of the guitar direct and an SP C1.

Compression was whatever my ears said was right at the time.

The wah thing was just a Dunlop Wah, Les Paul and JCM900 w/- Quad.

For the record the equipment used is as follows;

Soundcraft Spirit Studio 24/8 console
Fostex D160 16 track, 16/44.1 recorder
Studio Projects C1
Shure Sm58’s
Behringer ECM8000’s
Yamaha REV 5 .................used for reverb.
Digitech Studio Twin
PreSonus ACP8 compressor
Tannoy Reveal Monitors

If I've forgotten anything I apologise.

Again, many thanks.

I'm taking into consideration that this is a rough mix and that most of that has been covered already.

That singer is fabulous. The song sounds good. I haven't studied the lyrics thoroughly, but there is nothing the jumps out at me that sounds out of place in the couple of listens I've had.

I really look forward to hear the finished work :)

That was nice man. Smooth recording. Lotta business going on in the music. I was feeling Mike McDonald, a little Kenny Loggins, some Matchbox 20 , and more... That drum kit at the beginning was really noisy and I didnt like the sound. I like your drum tones on the real ones though. I'd like to hear the drums and guitar a little louder. Bass was good but a little dominate over the drums. Thats a fine listen to me. :)

Toki,

V-Drums were used right through, but there were two different "virtual kits" used. Also we used 4 outputs from the V-drum brain.........Kik, Snr, and 2 O/heads.

The first was very electronic/loopy sounding. The second was a pre-set called "Stage" or something like that.

It was actually the bass player who between playing notes hit the changeover button on the Roland brain-box...............that way the drummer didn't miss a beat:D .

What I did for the final mix was dupe the drum tracks (the joys of have a digital recorder), and then set the eq's on the channels with the "loopy" sound, set the eq's on the duplicate tracks for the stage sound.........then recorded these to 4 new tracks, doing a quick and accurate switch over.............4 trks of loopy, switched to 4 trks of Stage........all being recorded on new trks.

Once I get the new H/drive in my PC functioning reliably, (hopefully tonight), I will be doing final mixdowns to CD on 5 songs (including Leaving Today) and I will probably rotate them on NWR, as I don't think I have enough room there for all 5 at one time.

Watch this thread for updates.
