Anybody here play a theremin? I was think about getting one and was wondering what they are actually like to play? I've heard Joseph Wooten play one almost like a turntable which is sortof what I was going for. I also like the theremin work on the Flecktones album Little Worlds. Anyway, any advice ona a purchase and playing would be awesome. Thanks.

Were you thinking about getting one of the kits? They're around $200.00. I've never played one myself but I'm sure if you have good ears the learning process should be mostly intuitive and not difficult.

Have you tried one of those, hixmix?

If you wanna go cheap like that, then I'd choose this. For 30 bucks, it's perfect, especially if you come to find you don't wanna really play much. In fact, I'm expecting mine to come in within 2 weeks.

(my first choice - full CV control)

Kees Enkelaar Theremin (fully assembled)

(185 bucks - I like the Theramax sound better)

As for playing one, well, you gotta practice your ass off. The results are well worth it, though. There's a reasonable amount of video/cd guides available, and I think Clara Rockmore's guide to playing can be found online for download.

Good luck.

No. I've never played a theremin. Always wanted to get one. From the pictures I like the theremax best too. Is there any difference in sound between the thirty dollar one and the more expensive ones?

Yeah.
As for better or worse, well it depends on needs & purposes, I guess.
