GUITARDAZE
My buddy likes to record tunes and then have me mix them. This is one of his songs, he is singing and playing rhythm guitar. I played bass, lead guitar on it and sang some background vocals. The drummer plays in our band.

The problem when I get his tunes is that he records in a hurry. So I did a lot of work trying to make the lead vocal sound good in the mix.

Any mix feed back would be appreciated. Drums are live, and there are no loops or samples.

I think this sounds really good. The vocals are a little too upfront for my personal taste though. I'm not sure what you've done to the lead vox already, but my first thought if this was my song would be to lower the volume until I thought that the louder parts were at the right level of "upfrontedness". This may or may not make some of the quieter parts of the vox get lost in the instruments. If it did, I would compress a little more until the quieter parts were intelligable. This may not work for you and you may not even agree with me, but you know what the say about opinions.

To summarize I think right now it sounds a little too much like a singer with a backing band and not enough like a band playing together. Does that make any sense?

He looks nervous in the picture.. just kidding :p
Intro tone is nice and full... Mix is loud and full to my ears. Vocals are clear, almost too clear. I'd drop them back into the music a bit. Everything sounds well recorded, kind of a 90s rock vibe to it. You should try to match the wah wah guitar solo with the volume of the vox, because the guitar is the sings at that point. Fixing the overall vox volume would fix that. Nice wah wah though, dig that hitting the melody right before the final verse too. Catchy and well recorded, good job ;)

Sounds pretty cool. The mix sounds good. The playing is pretty cool.

:)

The drums are pretty cool.

The thing about this tune is that I could not get is vocal to sit in the mix. I would eq an eq/compress, but it had this harsh unlistenable tone no matter what I did. Finaly, I thought, I should try one of these mic modeling plugins. So I had never tried one of these. I pluged it in and messed with the settings. Flat to U87 was the setting I used and I adjusted the proximity efect. Next thing I know the vocal sounds good. Never thought these things worked. Guess I need to mess around with plug ins a little more.

Van Greco, thanks for the comments. I am going to remix tonight and pull back the lead vocal. I may also push up the snare and the lead a little.

SnakeDogg5050, thanks for listening and commenting. Vox is coming down and lead going up.

Sonic Rat, I will let him know that you think he sounds like Hootie.

Bigbubba, thanks for the listen.

I will re-post this with the new mix. Also, the singer mentioned that he may want to come over to my place and redo the vocal, so maybe I will wait until then.

In the intro I would center the first guitar - on headphones it sounds panned too far to the right. I think you have (or will) be addressing the mix issues I had already so I'll try and watch for the remix..... The tone is good on all the instruments and vocals. I agree with the comparison to Hootie....nice groove....
