Them Giaganto Mics on TV

Hey, I was watching the Lakers gay victory tonight and noticed the enormous mics that the camera crews have out on those long stands. Im just curious as to what these are? They look real big and they have those long cone windscreens on em. Does anyone have any info on these?

I wasn't watching,but my guess is that they were "shotgun" mics,designed to pick up localized sources at a distance when other undesired sources are also present.Cheers!

Yup. Them things are shotgun mics. Though what makes them look even bigger are those fluffy wind muffs and huge foam/wire-mesh windscreens that cover the whole mic!
