hi there

my style of music lies somewhere between motley crue and poison (uuaaaaaahh... what a mix! you might think).
now the question is all about the vocals (though I'm thankful for tips on the guitars too):
the vocals always "fall out" of my mixes... in which way should I use eq, echo, reverb and stuff?

thnx

Yo Six of 13 from Star Trek:

Don't know what type of gear you are using to record, but if it is a multitracker, suggest you do the vocals LAST via the overdubbing process; this way, you can back down the background and push up the vocal (s).

Another way to get the vocals up front is to pan the music tracks a little left/right and leave the vocal track straight up and down.

Run your vocals through a good mic pre but don't distort them.

Reverb is an ear thing. I use one patch pretty consistently from my Alesis Midiverb which gives the vocal a nice bounce. But you need to experiment with how wet, how much, and tweaking in general.

I just ordered a Lexicon reverb unit; the Lexicon is 24 bit whereas the Alesis is 16 bit; so, I hope I get an improvement. If not, I can send it back. Zzounds people are pretty good about that unless one mucks up the product.

When you're mixing, you really don't need to push the EQ'a too much but it's an option. Or, you can record with EQ, whichever way suits you.

Hope this helps you into the big room of Experimentation and lots of ratiocination.

ok, maybe i have to get a bit more precise...

saying "fall out" i mean the vocals sound way different from the rest of the tracks.
i did low-/high-end cuts, added pre-delay, reverb, various delays... i even tried some slight flangers, chorus.
it still sounded like "not belonging to the song".

You need a compressor. Get the dynamics under control and you can make them sit in the mix.

okely dokely... I forgot to say: I use compression too ;-).

come on guys! is my voice just this $h*tty that it just doesn't fit in no song?!

Make an mp3, post it in the mp3 mixing clinic, a few doors down from here. You will get lots of helpful advice.
