Hiya guys and gals and you all rock.

I have been doing home recordings with my Fostex Fd8,
I think you will all piss yourself laughing cause I already am.

As I was saying Fd8, I have an Audigy 2 with breakout box that has Midi, in, out, Spdif, And optical in, out.

I have sonar 3 Producer Bought by the way.

O.k I have all this cool gear ( So I Think but it was all cheap lol )

How do I Mix and Master my tracks and get that real seperation of instruments in the mix.

Like you can hear all the instrumants clearly but yet it is in the mix

And with all this gear I have is there any geniuses out there that can tell me how to put it all together to form one useful recording system.

I have tried the manual road like the Audigy, Sonar, Fd8 Manuals and I am fucking confused and for the life of me cannot understand their blurb and then piecing all three to make one working system is making me suicidle.

Now I know you are all thinking ( what the ) and yes I admit I am a total dumb ass but I just want to record my music and sound half decent :( .

So when you are all finished laughing do you think one of you may be able to help Putting the Fd8, Audigy, and Sonar into a functional working studio setup.

I am getting a yamaha mixer which is 6 channel as well.

Well any help is welcome and any idea's on recording is appreciated.

Regards Raver

Here's a decent place for some mixing info. http://www.bluebearsound.com/articles/mixing101.htm

Helped me a bit, along with everyone else here. Just keep reading stuff here. Do a search on whatever you are attempting, read up, then play with the tools you have. Mixing is very hard, and since I'm not very good, I can't give you much advice, but hopefully someone else can help more.

Good luck.

I think you need to go back to the first square here... Mixing instruments that don't sit well together is hard.

Mixing instruments that do sit well together can be remarkably easy, with little or no EQ, compression, etc.

Get your core sounds in the pocket first and foremost - Everything else will fall into place. The most important step in your final production master is what you did before you ever pressed the "RECORD" button for the first time.

I like that... I think I'll add it to my signature.

Sounds Pretty simple, it just worries me having a muddy mix once effects are added and so on and I really want clarity in the mix.

And as for eq, Should,t I finalize or master Flat rather than adding eq and messing the mix up.
Mind you as I am doing electonic chillout style music Enigma meets jarre with hints of goerge benson guitar style, I want a Nice bass drum sound like enigma's Sadness track so what are your suggestions as I do get a bit confused about the role of eq'ing and compressing.

I am very very new to this as I only got my Fd8 last week and I am playing around trying to get a good workable structure when recording and mixing and mastering.

I know you guys on this board have hell of a lot of knowledge and experience with what works and what does not work and I am your teachable student.

It is very daunting being a absolute non experienced person in the studio or recording techniques.

As a live muso no Probs.

I am looking forward to any help and suggestions and looking around this board I feel I can ask and be confident that I can grow in these techniques.

Thnx everyone and look forward to the responses.

I think the ADAT I/O will output your FD8 data in discrete 8-track format.

(That's to the best of my knowledge, so it should be verified before implementing).

If this holds true, you'd need an ADAT I/O PCI card for the 'puter side, and then you can mix "in-the-box", as is your objective,... by my reading of your question.

This guy just cut and pasted this GIANT post in at least four forums. Yecch.

I did not know I was not able to ask on different boards and appologize.

1 Recording
2 Mastering
3 Fostex users

Well If you read my question, all these different boards are relevent Thats why I posted on them all.

That may be true, and would seem like a sufficient answer, or cause to post on multiple forums with the same question,... but you'll get flamed for it, nonetheless. It's seen as useless and poor bbs etiquette.

Also, some forums are held as more "sacred" than others. I don't know jack about the Mixing/Mastering forum, or of those who post here, but heaven forbid if you crosspost to the Mic Forum! Aaaaggghhh! Sacred ground,... the mic forum is! There'd be almost no end to the flamefest, then!!!

Now,... don't flame me for saying this, as I learned it the hard way, too! Been there & done that! ;)
