this one might be renamed "Journey to Everywhere"



ok, i have 2 different versions of this song.
the second one, i'll post tomorrow....

the differences between them?
this one, is more stripped down, less guitar parts, more raw sounding.
there's one main guitar on the left, lead vox is centered, and most of the backing vox are thrown slightly to the right, to offset the rhythm guitars.

on a few sections, i bring in a 2nd rhythm on the right.
almost no solo guitar work in this one, it's pretty much just a one guitar kind of thing.

the second version, is more produced, 4 rhythm guitar parts, a bunch of solo stuff, a bunch of active panning.

i guess i'm most concerned with bass and drums, and how they sit with everything.

Pretty dang good. Performances are real good.

I think you could turn up the lead vocal just a nudge.

I'd have gone for just a little less distortion on the guitars. Real good playing. Liked the way the two rhythm parts played off of each other.

Loved the bass part. Bass seems to be sitting just right.

i wanted it to be super thick.
not metal...
and not scooped psuedo metal.

just really thick saturated rock tone.

this riff, actually works really well on the acoustic...
i've thought about doing a straight, mellower, all acoustic version of this one as well.



i mean, it is a waltz, after all!!!

I'm digging that Stone Temple Pilots sound on this one. Those drums sounds roomy, yet serve the song perfectly. The vocals can come up a tiny bit. Was the bass mic'ed?
 
Although I dig all of the guitar in this one (they are played greatly and I like it alot) I will have to say that I absolutely like the hell out of the bass part. It is rocking out pretty badass. The whole song sounds good as well and the vocals are awesome as could be. This is another great tune dude. Keep rockin' out cause it is great.

Definately bring up the vox.

The guitars may have to come down a little to make room.

I just finished listening to you instrumental post...great stuff....This is real cool too....You must have been around the block a few times...you must have experienced rock when rock was real and good...I agree with earlier comments...the vox could come up a bit...thanks for some cool stuff to listen to after a long shitty day at work!!!
 
Dang dude, You've been busy! I try not to miss any of your posts, but it's getting hard.:D The guitar tone is great, as usual. Vocals are great, as usual - your harmonies have a signature sound. This one kinda reminds me of King's X. I'd have to agree with a few post; the vox and guitars seems to compete for space in a few places. I would love to hear you make a song with more commercial hook - I know that's probably not your goal, but I think you'd be great at it.

yea man, i always liked STP
their production tho, was a little too intense for me....
especially with Brendan O'Brien's overkill limiting (or was that the mastering?)
the bass, was direct, thru a Sansamp Bass DI, into a tube mic pre and dbx compressor.
further processed on mixdown.

everybody seems to want the vox stronger, i think they sit well where it is, but i'm going to do a new mix with a 1db jump on the vox, see how that comes across loud and soft....
the drums were programmed in sony Acid. 16 bit wav files.

you know, i split my time about 50/50 between songs and instrumentals.
and yes, i've been playing a long time, and spent 6 years as a full time road musician.

commercial hooks, no, not interested.... i just follow my muse on these things, i'm not at all concerned with trying to change the stronger riff to a more expected, simpler, or generic version just to support a melody hook.
i know it seems like the logical, or typical thing to do, but i write these for myself, and don't have to answer to a record label for the decision.
i also don't get paid for it.
