The Travel song ~revisited ~

a new mastering session of a previously mixed tune, rendered this new version of a song i've recently done..

"Travel Song Eq-mas"

i'm struggling to teach myself how to work in Sonar.
so i'm doing a lot of experimenting right now, just to learn this program.

much more powerful than my roland, of course, but i'm totally lost in it.
with the roland VS machine i'm used to, i can do things in my sleep....
with this, it's a whole new ballgame.

i took a problematic mix (i.e. a mix i fucked up) and tried to fix some serious bass guitar masking issues with some fancy eq'ing and multiband compression.

but i also lost a touch of the kick, of course.

the experiment, was trying to find the bass masking frequencies (93hz) and pull it out without toasting everything else.....

please have a listen, and tell me where i could improve the mix with eq fixes only...
i'll remix this from scratch, after i retrack all new guitar parts...

but for now, it's a learning experience for me.

MY NEXT STEP---
is to retrack the guitar, but here's what i'm going to do..

i'm going to play the rhythm part, by playing single line parts, one guitar part at a time, each with it's own amp/speaker/mic setup, and try to blend the single line parts together so it sounds like a single rhythm.

why?

oh hell, i don't know!!
LOL

kind of like a blend between the old May and Scholz way of harmonizing, except used in a 'rhythm' context.....

at least, in theory.

i'll track that next week.....

You're the man!!

LOL

thanks so much, for cluing me in, i just figured everybody thought it stunk.

wow.....

this really pisses me off...

why?! would the home recording bbs software actually edit my link?

i checked the original posting, and it is CORRECT.

but after i pressed 'submit reply', the bbs software manually edited my link, making it no good.

that pretty much sucks ass, eh?

when did they start doing that?

ANYWAY......

here's the good link.

there's only one song posted, the download is a 256kbps mp3.....

and thanks again!

HERE'S THE FIXED LINK again..... this software won't let me go in and edit the first post, how come?

An excellent example of one guitar successfully carrying a heavy load throughout the song. Reminds me of VH or Rush that way. What a great job man.....
The mastering job is very good...I'm still of a mind that the vocals could come up a bit (they're so good :D ). It's a quality mix though so don't change it on my account...lol.

Continued excellence Mr Gonzo-X

:D :) :D :)

thanks ido1957

you're the only one, that stepped up to the plate.

it's tricky, putting tunes out their for folks to take a stab at it...
and have no one respond...
i mean, folks can be supportive, and they can be mean...

but you're always supportive and constructive, so i really appreciate it...

i'm always looking for insights, and knowledge from others, on how to make the mixes, arrrangements, better.....
i believe your comment about needing the vox louder, is a subjective one... but it is so common, i've decided on the new version, i'll mix the vox up a good bit louder, and see if i can blend these 'future guitar parts' around the voice to fill it in better...
glad you liked it!

i tried to make it rock......

anybody else?
does anyone here get into analyzing frequency ranges of songs...
you know, buildups of frequencies and all that?

i have sonar, but don't have a clue how to look at these kinds of stats with it, yet.....

can someone tell me where my low end issues are, in respect to this mix?

I remember this - must have heard the pre-mastered version.

On headphones the snare is slightly skewed to the left. Guitar sounds good but it is a bit too dominant - the vox could come up. The BVs are really good. I'm not hearing any major EQ clashes - you seem to have got everything seperated pretty well

I like this, and I remember the original version (believe the bass was problematic, right?). Bass sound is very good on this mix, but could use a little more bottom. The up-front guitar works very well IMO. It's also not overly flashy without being boring - written by and for musicians while remaining melodic.

The vocals are pushed a bit too far back, it's hard to make them out at times (they're competing with the guitar). I'd bring them up a notch or two.

Drums sound okay, maybe a little roomy (too much reverb?).

Overall this is a solid recording, and I like what I could make out of the lyrics.

And I'll say it again - pop Jane's Addiction. :D

the first version, yeah, it was a quick throw down mix, that didn't work well at all....
working with the acid drum loop software, i still don't know how to pan the individual parts too well..
it's mostly an already-blended set, with only stereo tracks, already mixed, so i kind of have to take em like i get em....
right on, with the guitar vs vox mix...
thanks!

pinky-
melodic was definitely the idea behind this one.
i tried to take a very simple chord change.. it's mostly just going between D and A....
but add just enough spice to hint at different modes and imginary harmonies and modal changes over the top....
and yeah, too much room on the drums!
LOL
when you setup the acid drums, some of them are dry, some already have some room on them, and some of them have duplicate tracks that add tons of room..
i think i blended in too much of THOSE tracks, and end result is, the taj mahal.
LOL
pop jane's addiction..
that's kinda cool... i should maybe chase some more left-field harmonies ala ferrell?

thanks for listening!

das19-
thanks for checking it out...

i think, on my next 'final' mix, it'll be a lot easier to nail the mix right to begin with, by better eq'ing the bass track at mixdown, and blending the guitars and voices in first, bringing the bass in below it, finding the masking issues, and re-eq'ing the bass so it still stands out, but doesn't sit on the vox.

Very nice....tight overall, everything works for me except the vocals which could come up a bit. Very enjoyable listen, thanks!!!

jpw23

you know, on MY monitor system, the vox seems to play back very distinctly...
yet, when i play it back on my shitty little computer speakers at work, i hear the same thing you say...
vox seems a bit weak.

it's tricky, to find the balance that plays out on ALL systems..
my monitors are just not that good (KRK Rokits)

thanks for the headsup....
