Hat STYLE. Not contents.
Hi guys. I just finished the first mix of a theme song I'm doing for a friend's podcast.

Talented Mr. Bigsby | Regdar and the Fighters

As always, feedback is appreciated.

I tried to apply some of the techniques I used in that last project I did here (too lazy to find the link!), but I recorded more tracks overall, so I'm afraid it might be a bit cluttered and muddy? What do you think?

I think this one sounds pretty great.

One of your better mixes imo. Not too cluttered really. I really don't have anything to suggest - sorry!

Definitely one of your cleaner mixes. I have to ask though, why do your vocals always sound like they're coming from a small speaker on an AM radio? Do you do that on purpose? Is that your thing? I mean, it's cool if it is, I'm just wondering if that's intentional or not.

So this is a song about time travel? I wish I could travel back in time and tell myself NOT TO LISTEN! LOL! (Lord forgive me for that right there and please be with the Pigmies in New Guinney)

I'm not going for the AM radio effect. I just mix it how I think sounds good. It could be that I have weird ears and/or a weird voice?

Robby, nope. No time travel. At least not in this one. Any specific critiques?

I didn't mean it as a negative. It's kind of a neat effect. I just think that your lyrics are usually pretty witty and are the backbone of your songs, but sometimes your delivery is fast and with the thin vocal sound it can be hard to make out the words.

Real fun song. I liked it. All 1:20 of it. :)

That vocal thing at about :26? I couldn't understand the words. I don't know if you care. But if you do, you probably need to clear them up.

No other real mix comments. I thought it sounded good.

Sounds good to me VHS. It's not muddy - there's an element of clutter, but I think it works in the context of being a theme tune. You've captured the energy of it, which I think is the main thing.

I heard another one of yours the other day from my hard drive that I had downloaded a while ago, but not listened to at the time. I think it was The Reveal? Anyway, I was really impressed with it - good song and well recorded.

Thanks guys.

Yeah, the rap break is pretty indecipherable. One of the hosts did that; he claims it's his fridge. :D I just took his first take and ran with it.

I may just have a weird voice now that I think about it. Here is one of my songs that was tracked and mixed by a friend who's done this stuff professionally and has better equipment. The vox sound pretty similar, I think.

I liked this, but agree about the vocal - I couldn't make out the words. Now, I don't usually take a lot of notice of lyrics, but I think I found it a bit distressing I couldn't if I wanted to, if you know what I mean. Cool song, though!

yes! i always like checking out another VHS song. this one is super fun and circusy.

Vocals could come up some and maybe have some more balls (i don't know what frequencies or compressor settings give balls).

Voice reminds me a lot of they might be giants, so I think you can keep a lot of the cool timbre of it and still get it beefier.

The rest sounds really good. to me.

So bump the vox up a bit. I can probably do that... probably not 'til Monday though. Stupid stuff and things always happening. (Also, I have guests sleeping in my studio right now.)

Yo Steve! It's been a while... The only critique I have is that the vocals seemed a bit hard to decipher. Perhaps a bit too much delay? Anyway...

I listened to the link you gave as a reference to someone else recording your voice, and I've gotta say - night and day difference. Your voice sounds fuller in the mids and much, much (like huge amounts) warmer in that song. As always, I love your lyrics...

Keep at it, man!

Hmmm... Ok. Maybe I just can't listen to my own voice objectively. That probably makes this whole homerecording thing a lot more difficult, doesn't it...

Thanks, PI.

I guess you probably have the advantage of knowing the words already, so it's easy to pick them out.

Ok. I took another stab at it, but I couldn't get it any better.

I'll probably have to leave this one as-is and start experimenting with vocal tones. (And maybe find a new vocal mic. My S-12 may not be the best option, but my condenser mic is straight-up broken.)
