Aside from performance and instruments what is the main element in a DAW based studio that takes it from a "demo" studio to a "pro" studio. I am thinking it is your AD convertors. I am selling my house right now and am going to be getting a nice chunk of change and would like to start to build my studio to eventually be pro-level. I know I can't do it all in one bang but would like to start researching at what I'm looking for in each of the following categories. What do you think would be the best option, and what would cost look like. I am not including acoustics of the rooms etc...

Computer

Soundcards

Monitors

Mics

console

preamps

outboard effects

recording software

difference

forget about the equipment.
'PRO" is when one really knows audio engineering.
"PRO" is when you can produce any artist even a garage
band and make them sound good.
the equipment today and value for money at cheap prices
is way ahead in terms of noise floors than ages past.
hits were done once on ampex 1100 8 and 16 tracks with noisefloors of -55. compared to todays low noise sound cards,
even the poor ones at -80db.
but overall in a purely technical sense #1 has to be the quality of the sound card and its low noise as major factors.
just get an rme or lynx sound card and be happy.
VERY VERY PRO !
