LOL!!!
I have done some research on the Hercules.
This baby was scheduled for release in December 2003, then they announced that it would be released in April 2004. Potentially a good thing, as they reportedly chose to keep on working on the drivers, rather then releasing the product "as is" with doggy, buggy drivers.
Furthermore, it looks like they eventually demonstrated it at the Frankfurt Messe.
For sure there's a wealth of firewire soundcards coming out this year.
M-Audio with its Firewire 1814, allowing the I/O flexibility that the Firewire 410 couldn't deliver (everybody hoped they could use all of the 4 analog ins at the same time, but it turned out that it was either the two frontal mic or the two rear line ins).
Edirol has just released its
FA-101, which appears to me as a very appealing all-in-one solution.
Terratec is working on a firewire version of the Phase 88 rack, which again appears to be a rack version of
the Phase 88, that has unbalanced RCA analog ins.
ESi has two or three nice products coming next.
Personally I'm facing a dilemma: get the best PCI I can afford, hence an RME 9632 or
an Echo Layla 24, or wait a month or two then get the best firewire I can afford.
(in a month or two we'll see as well how great this new Emu contenders actually are, I wish I had the guts to get one now, but I prefer to make a 110% safe purchase)
The waiting and the reading is worning me out!
