The Same Mistake

Well it IS a happy new year.

(if we could just get rid of the damned lawyers).

I like the song very much. I was expecting blues, and while the subject matter may qualify, the structure is more complicated.

I won't babble much. I'll just let you know that I love the way you write, and I hope I can record like you do someday.

Best to you and yours,
chris

very very nice. very pro I like it a lot. It's really really hard to offer any constructive critisism here on such a polished performance but if I'm really really fussy I would say maybe the vibrato on the organ sounds too much from 3:45-3:52.

Excellent song... great words.

Cheers

Chris--soryy about the lawyer thing--but some of those ambulance chasers are out there, aren't they?

Dres--Thanks for the listen. Yeah, its that leslie thing. Whoosh, whoosh whoosh! What else is an organ player gonna do besides smack the magic whirl switch?!! :D

LOL...no apology necessary, man. I make more fun of lawyers than most people.

"dooooowwwn on maiiinstreet"....
man this reminds me of that guy...you know that guy?..

nice work

Another great song from the 'dad. pretty soon you're gonna have to send me another cd of stuff.

Like Chris, I always love your writing. This has a Seegar vibe to it for sure although parts of the guitar remind me of Robert Cray, especially the tone. What a great story-song. The recording is really about as good as they come. Any changes, I think, would just be a matter of personal preference. I'd like a slightly longer fade but that's about it. Really good man.

happy new year crawdad!

you know i always like your voice but this one stands out for some reason. perfect performance!

i like the ultra clean guitar solo! love your guitar solos every time.

the mix is perfect, as usual.

constructive points. the reverb is too wet for my taste, but discussing reverb can be like politics around here so take that for what it's worth...not much. just too wet for me.

the organ does sound a little too simulated. i have yet to find a synth that matches the real thing...although the NI B4 examples I listened to are pretty damn close!

Drums sound sooo much better than the old rogers kit.

How is it I could never hook up players like you when I lived in Detroit? VERY polished sound my friend. I can hear this one on the radio. I love the guitar tone. Pure Fender.:D

2 words..

Bob Seger.. or 'Night Moves'

this is radio.. it doesn't sound like homerecording to me..

Yeah lawyers suck.. I recently had to deal with one.. He didn't even kiss me before he screwed me.. :(

excellent offering as always Mr.C.. I had it on loop for awhile..

zero suggestions.. good tune!

......this sounds Great man, Im gonna hit this from home tonight.....

........I'll be back!!!

Smooth recording Crawdad.I checked it out last night before I went to bed.I'll have another listen today.Well written song.I always zoom in on the lyrics of your songs right off the bat and check the music out after the 3rd or 4th listen.Well crafted lyrics. The song is a mix between Seger and Mark knopfler to my ears.......sounds really good and again, the song writing is really well crafted and thought out.

Real nice song. Great lines throughout, espcecially the "hungry lawyers need the dough... up with the curtain on with the show" stuff. All real nice.

Nice clean recording.

Potential ways to improve...

Maybe there are none. But harmonies I think would sound nice during the chorus. For some reason I think female backing parts would be a nice touch. Maybe I think that because that's probably what Seger would have done :). The lead guit could maybe sound a little warmer with a slight cut in the mids.

Small nits. Real good job on a real good song.

That was really a comfortable and filling tune man. The tones were all warm and tasteful, no edges sticking out anywhere, yet all the instruments and voice had nice placement of their own and complimented each other well.
I hear quite a bit of folks just laying down some backing "stuff" and then singing over it and then pumping in a solo somewhere and ending up with serious structure issues. This tune reflects a seasoned professional that understands rythym and counter rythym, as well as the interaction and ettiquete of accompanying voices.
Love the piano and mellow B. 'song was not hungry for anything. The fluid quality and warmeth reminded me of Jackson Brown stuff (not the stuff that got thrashed on the radios). I have been refreshed, thanks dude!

This is so cool having all you guys stopping by to listen. By now, I feel like I know all of you and its like old friends coming by to say hi. I really needed it today--I'm in some kind of post holiday depression and don't know why. Hearing from all of you brightens the grey 20 degree gloom thats come down here!

Jamal--thank you. I don't know the guy, but he lives about five minutes from me. Maybe some of his Like A Rock residuals will accidently blow into my yard or something!

Lt. Bob--HA! You got the Cray thing, my man! I was gonna do an overdriven solo and it didn't sound right, so I went clean into the amp. All the while thinking about our man RC. You know, when you play real clean like that, the damn guitar makes you really work hard to make any kind of a statement! Thanks for listening!

erichenryus--thanks for the comments. I tried a different mic for the vocal this time--a V67. I found it bright and actually rolled of some highs--then it sounded better to me. The reverb? C'mon the reverb is perfect, isn't it? Please don't take my reverb?:D Actually, you may be right--by the time I mixed this thing my ears were toast anyway. I WISH I could play those Rogers drums, but they are resting comfortably right now. Anybody want to buy a set of vintage drums?

Track Rat--I wish you did live up here. I think we'd get along quite well! Thanks!

B. Sabbath--Those are some pretty nice comments my friend. Yeah, its definitely from that Seger/Knopfler/Browne/Van Morrison pool of stuff. I listened to all that stuff in the day and I still like it. My heart really lies with those records where the whole band played at least a bed track together. My dream, even now, is to finish my studio so I can do sessions like that again.

Guernica--I'll check back with you around midnight--after my gig.

Kramer--I like the fact that you listen to the lyrics. For me, thats what makes a song. At least 50% anyway. This was done in 86 and I fixed a couple lines afew years ago. Just decided to give it a whirl and see what would happen. Thanks for the listen.

TripleM--thank you, as always. Unfortunately, until my daughter decides to wail or they invent the"female Backup singers in a box" plug-in (:D) I don't have a way to get those parts. Anyway, thank you for listening and for the comments.

Toki987--Your comments certainly refresh me--so it works both ways! I thank you for knowing what I was going for. Damn--you make me sound like I know what I'm doing! Truth is--most of it is just trial and error until something starts to take shape!

Participant--even though you haven't posted anything, I just want you to know that I'm thinking of you and will make sure I don't miss you again!

Awesome all around as expected...

the only thing that jumps out at me is the reverb on the snare/side hits seems to have a bit too much decay and maybe too big a room for the rest of the mix. Could be my listening set up though. I'm finding my room very unsatisfactory for mixing lately...gotta do something about it...

But this is sweet...very nice! Your stuff is always very listener friendly.

Great tune! Really loved the "clean" guitar work, pretty awesome.

I'm sure if you did them yourself it would come out sounding fine. You gotta set yourself apart from Seger in some way. :) Honestly, it would be a much better song with a nice three part.

Nice to hear another one from you, crawdad.

This is very, very good - nice songwriting, great arrangement, great playing, very strong vocal performance.

Your stuff is always so well done, that only nit-picks are possible. So here goes! ;)

I can hardly hear any bass guitar at all! The kick is OK, but the bass is too quiet.

The piano on the first "bridge" (Am/D - 0:33-0:46) sticks out a bit - either it's the wrong part, or it's too loud, or it needs compressed a bit.

There were a couple of vocal bits I thought would benefit from being re-tracked:

"Under one roof" at around 0:20 (pitching off a bit)
"Learning to live" at around 1:56 (not clear which note you're going for on "live" (D or E)
"Frozen the soul" at around 2:52 (slight pitching problem)

The vocal sound is a little harsh or thin - can you warm it up a wee bit? It's a great performance, but I think you're missing some (low) mids.

I think the attack on the guitar solo sound is a little abrasive or has a little too much string sound - can you soften it slightly? (maybe with a fast attack compressor?)

Harmonies would be cool.

Now back to the good stuff:

Great singing. I particularly like the delivery on "slipping away", "on with the show", "went astray".

I love the middle. Simple but effective writing.

I like the organ sound - the magic whirl switch is good!

Give us a longer fade, with more of that Knopfler soloing. Nice.

Anyway, hope the above epic is of some use or interest. Me giving you mixing advice seems somehow back to front, but what the hey!

Cheers

AB

What chu talkin' bout, 'dad? :o

This toon sounds great, as usual. Production/instrumentation reminds me a bit of some Fleetwood Mac (Sweet Little Lies, or something). Possibly a bit lite on lows... but that's a preference thing... (almost has that sound you used to get when using the wrong stylus on a record player? Plenty of treble, lite on bass)

very nice recording. Impossible to critique something this tight. (well... impossible for me to critique it... on computer speakers :D) Anything pointed out by others in the thread is surely worth looking into.

"Every day, someone's heart's gonna break". Pro-grade lyrics. Love how the piano holds everything up after "and so it goes"...
that rocks. The acoustic guitar is very, very smooth. Compressed at all?

EDIT-- how bout some cracker whiteboy choir backup vocals during the chorus? "Heart's gonna break"... etc? You do those so well :)
