I have an RNC... and really like it.... (on pretty much everything but bass....)

I just got an Ashly CL-100 compressor that works exceptionally well on bass. I haven't used it on anything else... Price paid? $30 on eBay.

The manual that it came with states that it's the same compressor internals as the CL50 and CL52, both of which are usually on eBay for dirt cheap.

This comp sounds better (cleaner) to me, on bass than any of my following comps:
1. DBX 166A
2. Symetrix 522
3. RNC

(Don't know about the PRO VLA, as it's not here yet...)

Just a heads up for a really good, cheap compressor for bass....

I don’t know first hand, but I have heard that the Symetrix 501 is a good dedicated bass compressor that you can pick up fairly cheap now. I don’t know how it compares to the others you listed.

Pier

I have heard that also...
I have a Symetrix 522 that I haven't tried for that, but am selling it to make room for the PRO VLA.

I don't know if the 501 and 522 have the same VCA though.... (or any other circuitry in common...)

Bass Compressor

Most users would agree that the RNC is NOT favored for Bass because it has incredibly fast attack times. It is best used for acoustic/vocals. Try the PRO VLA for creamy bass response...

The symetrix 501 is supposed to rock out on bass but most people are talking about the original "Toggle" switch model. They did something different in the unit when they switched to the push button. The prices have been going up slightly but you can probably still find one used for around 100 bucks.

I have a two channel Ashly, a CL52 and it also sounds nice on my guitar amps - Deluxe Reverb mostly. Paid $90 for it. It might be kinda an unknown gem.
