G'mornin all,
About a month ago I posted my first ever MP3 on the appropriate forum. Many folks there told me that I needed a better mic. I believed them (I've got a 20 yr. old AKG BT330) but part of me believed that a) my voice was rusty from years of unuse and b) being a Newbie, I would eventually learn to better use my equipment. While a+b are most certainly true, the fact that I need a new mic was driven home yesterday.
I visited the only local music store to replace the internal windscreen in my AKG. It had almost turned back into the dust from whence it came. While there, I struck up a conversation with the techie about the noise floor when using my mic. He told me that my mic was just old and tired and proceeded to pull out some mics for comparison. WOW! I repeat...WOW do I need a new mic! Of course, the Shure SM86 just blew me away. But, even the $50 PG58 put my AKG to shame. Clear, detailed and responsive.
So now begins the search for a new mic. The better to hear my foibles with. Now, how do I justify the expenditure to my sweetie?
Anyway, thanks for the nudge, folks.
