"The Payment" - a classic horror story re-told

a halloween treat for you!
:D

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

new version: "THE PAYMENT"

this one has new rhythm guitar parts (did em last night) that are done on the clean channel of a driven mesa boogie...
opened up the sound of the mix quite a bit..
but more midrangy...

story:
it's a little ditty about 2 brothers and a lycanthrope.......

it's loosely based on the original wolfman movie, the one where larry talbot gets bitten by the werewolf, and he see's the pentagram in his hand, and he knows he's fucked, so he goes

to the old gypsy woman to try to be cured, and she basically tells him the only thing for him to do, is to kill himself...... what a bum deal...

anyway, these 2 brothers have been partying all night, drunk as skunks, and one of them staggers out into the moor, and meets his maker.

the remaining brother wants revenge, but is sober enough to figure out that he'd better get some kind of ammunition...
so he goes to see the gypsy-witch, to get some aconite (wolfsbane) and a spell here, and a prayer there, and thinks that he's well prepared, and so he goes out to the moor to get his revenge.

but that's not what he gets......

“The Payment”
Written by Robert F. Gilliland

Nightime, on the moor
drank up all the mead
mist is in the air
full moon, did the deed.

never saw the evil...
that poor ole son of a bitch
felt the claws that gripped his throat
yeah, he was dead without a twitch.

"it's your brother down on the moor,
with his head down at his feet!"

drink the aconite, tonight
toast the witches curse
pray to whoever you believe in
to pass over you the worst

it's your brother on the moor,
with his head down at his feet
and the debt has not been paid in full
will you, your maker, meet?

run into the moor
and see the evil eye
upon you, cast a glance,
and the payment, it is nigh.

This sounds familiar...

Did you post it last year?

vomithat

yes, i did...

but this year, i stripped the old drum track off...

and literally played this one, using a maudio keyrig keyboard, in real time...
i used 3 midi tracks...
one for kick/toms, one for hi hats and tom fills, and one for cymbal work.

so 3 performances, stacked on top of each other, to get the entire drum track done.

LAST NIGHT.....

i had an opportunity to do some fresh guitar tracking.

so i DITCHED the (2) heavy rhythm guitar parts, left and right..

and RE-RECORDED the rhythm guitar part, using a single track, and using a very cleaned up lead channel on the boogie.

i was going for a cleaner chimey grindy part, and it came out very nice.

i just haven't had time to mix it yet...
i'll try to do that tonight, and post it tomorrow.

it COMPLETELY CHANGED the feel of the thing.....

it let the tom work ring out much better, brought out more AIR in the mix, and made everything so much clearer.

in fact, it has made me re-think my rhythm guitar tone entirely.

I enjoyed this last year.
Def more mid happening but there's plenty on top.
It reminds me a bit of Thin Lizzy - the vocal phrasing across the riff I think!
The midi drum give away is the unplayable in real time sections with cymbals & toms.
I don't think the bass drum tone suits the song - it sounds more DM than this track.
Good work overall.
Excellent lead work!

yep, you're right, about the multiple inputs at the same time...

at least i played them in real time!
LOL
i did this on a keyboard.....

so, i've gone back and stripped out everything but what would be a foot-hi-hat steady 4/4 thru the toms....
that's a lot better!
good ear!
