"The Passing" With Lt. Bob and Pedullist

I have been blessed with the priviledge (and great challenge) of pursuing the best possible mix of Lt. Bob's saxaphone section and Pedullist's frettless bass into my tune. Their contributions have taken the song into a more "organic" and natural place. But it's still a big mix. Steve had suggested using his sax parts in more of a synth pad type approach, which was a good idea. But the parts IMO were so sweet that I felt they needed more presence in the song. Pedullist's smooth fretless bass playing also demands its own unique space. Hopefully nothing is lost in his track. I also brought more guitar into the mix, so essentially all the major synth work has either been lowered in volume, or simply deleted.

These guys are both top notch players IMO, and it felt like playing with them both on stage while I was mixing this. I'm hoping to reflect that in the mix. Thanks in advance for any listens, comments, and suggestions you may offer about anything you hear!

I only have a couple of things to say

Wow, excellent stuff. The bass and Sax are nice. I would love to hear some large gong bells(extreme low gong tones) in with some of the mix.

I don't know where you would get the sounds from. With the mid-eastern tonality running through the song, those deep reverberant bell tones would really be excellent in a few places.

This is very good, orignal stuff.
 
Great!......A song that was a couple of years in the making.


First off, Pedullist's bass playing adds a lot to this song.....man, he's good. I'm gonna have to track him down and get some bass tracks. The fretless is perfect for this and I actually wouldn't have thought it would be. Those slides he does into notes are just right.....I likes it.

Also...Tom, I personally like the more guitar-intensive direction you've taken this. The synth patches were ok, but to me, the guitar parts bring it more into a rock mode whereas before, it sounded very middle eastern. Both are good but I like that David Gilmour sort of sound you've got going there. I think it adds a lot to this tune.

I actually have listened to this song a lot since Tom wrote it. When he first did 'The Passing' right after 9/11.......I PM'ed him about how much I liked the song and that I'd like to do something on one of his tunes sometime. I was a newbie then. :D
That led to several other songs of his that I got to play on. They were all great learning experiences since Tom, IMHO is the real deal. He writes what I consider to be music of the very highest caliber......and it truly is a unique style that's challenging to find things to play that are appropriate and contribute anything.

So it was a surprise when, a few months ago, (hmmmm.....maybe longer ;) ), he suggested me trying something on this song. And then he waited, and waited, and freakin' waited.
I went thru a busy spell and couldn't get to it. Finally my schedule freed up and I appreciate his patience so much; 'cause this song is one I've always wanted to be able to play with.

wow fellas........ nice stuff here!!!

...this really popped out nice. Tom, the stereo panning in this is Excellent. Youve got things in places that i didnt even realize were possibilities. Im not a big fan of wide mixes, but this is just plain killer. ......very well placed bg voc parts. I love those distant screams.
I can see how it would be a challenge for Lt. to put a sax part to this. ...and the direction he chose is a good one. It's a very nicely played part that transparently fits into the tune. ...btw, you mixed him in very well too.
......and where the hell is that bass playing foreigner?:D Very nice playing man. This was a fun listen for me, ....well executed line. ......solid and tasteful. Re: its mix..... It sounds a little fuzzy at the bottom to me. I know you wanna keep all of that meat , I guess i would just like to hear more emphasis on mid's on a fretless so that the "squeeze" shines through. I would try a low cut to clean up the bottom and a mid boost.

I have nothing I can say except this was excellent and it goes directly to the keepers folder.

I'm going to get a key bind to type that phrase in when you post stuff man. I probably don't even have to listen to it then...just hit the key bind :D...except then I'd be missing out.

Excellent work all who were involved.

Very tasteful additions Lt.Bob & Pedullist.:)

The only things I didn't dig were the backwards reverb/delay (never liked that effect), and the vocal got a tad mid-hot in a few spots.

Other than that this sounds great. Very dynamic!:cool:

I like the additions alot, the bass is perfect, nice and rich..
The sax is cool and tasty and fits in well...
I also like the added guitars...

As far as the song as a whole, the production and the mix, IMO I think this is your best... Its my favorite anyway...:)

This song is just awesome!!...

Sloop- Thanks Sloop. I totally hear what you're saying about adding gongs and bells. I'm just afraid of going overboard with it. This mix is extremely full and already difficult to pull together. I mean DIFFICULT. I have some decent gong patches in my Korg that I could maybe try later, but I really need to start developing some of my newer ideas. Thanks for the suggestion!

Toki- you mentioned "mutating." I totally loved getting the guitars to mutate in and out of the sax section. They share a lot of the same frequency range, so it's a matter of finding the right levels and just cutting a few conflicting freq ranges here and there. I took the same approach with the bass and the low drone synth in the back. More on those issues when I respond to Mike. Thanks for the ears brotha.

Lt. Bob- Do I know you? :) To be perfectly honest, each time I got you a little more clear in the mix my jaw would drop again. It's just fucking beautiful. I've always felt that the ability to weave is a vitally important talent of a musician. And you've got it. For you to be able to write parts like you did for "Chrysalis" and now this, both full songs already, is pretty damn impressive IMHO. Thank you once again!

Mike- thanks a lot. The bass track came with a major buzzing from Tjarko's monitor (screen). I had to dump a shitload of 2-4k to get ride of it. To try and offset that move, I raised some 7k a little. I also rolled off some lows. I've attached a picture of the EQ...maybe you'll have a suggestion? The compressor was the Waves C1...same I think. Thanks Mike!

Jagular- I'll get a key bind that says..."thanks, now go listen to the song." :) I appreciate that man. Thank you.

M. Brane- Yea, there's still a few hot mids in the vocals here and there. I may or may not deal with them. I need to move on to a new song or two. Glad you dug it though. I'm keeping the reverse reverb though. It's the only chance I've had to use my old Midiverb 4! :D

This is the bass EQ settings. I had to cut a ton of buzzing noise out of the 2-4k range. If anyone else feels the bass needs more definition, please offer up your suggestions! Thanks.

Waves EQ. It's a little more sensitive than the Cakewalk EQ I used to use.

Awesome! Sometimes those sax parts did sound like synth pads. Very,very cool.
