I HOPE you do take it as a compliment, by all means. You probably put up some of the best music/mixes I've heard on the internet, and unlike some of us who have been struggling recording for years, and years and years.... you pull it off with an A+ every time.
 
Hey guy, I got that link for you. I had to put a post over at guitar.com to get it again. I had it on my old computer so I needed to replace it anyway.

I'm not really into too much theory that doesn't fall into the mainstream of rock, country, and blues. Some guys are really into these exotic scales, I’m really not.

Anyway, I just wanted to pass this on because I found it to be fascinating, and obviously you have found a use for the sound.

Listen to the first mode here. (Ionian) or the basic major scale. With the few inflections they put on certain notes this basic scale is transformed into an accurate Indian scale.

I didn't mean to criticize the line. I just thought you might be as intrigued as I was when you find out that it's not the scale that's exotic, it's the inflections.

after reading mix's response I'm really searching for something that might be useful to you.. I have nothing I could mention that wouldn't be preference.. The sound is good, the vocals are Sluice.. Yeah the words are hard to make out in some spots but lots of good music is like that.. It's funny because the first thing I thought of when this started playing was how similar the beginning arabic sound was to something I did about 4 years ago.. I never posted it because unlike this one it sounds like shit.. I recorded it on an 8 track 1/4 reel..

Anyway, I'm not listening on monitors but it sounds on from here..

This is a dumb question to me... If you wrote it and recorded it, then of course it belongs on your CD.. If you had more songs than could fit on a CD, a good question would be which 10 of these 15 or something, but the 'does this fit' question should not apply..

Nothing to add that hasn't been said .... but honestly, I think this mix is great as is !!! I'm reminded more of Todd Rundgren than Floyd.

Not catching all the lyrics never bothers me. In fact, I prefer reading along with a song. It allows me to visualize the lyric structure better - i.e. how the writer grouped his thoughts. It's not always obvious in a song's production.

OK Professor - in an effort to get into the mind of SLuiCe, what inspired you to add the synth/effect at 0:08 - the kind-of squeaky, bubbly synth? It works. Did you have that in mind all along? Did you just feel that spot needed something and you started screwing around with synth settings? I could ask a hundred similar inane questions, but I don't want to get too annoying.

I'll hang up and listen for my answer. Thanks.

There's nothing left to say. :D Seriously. Very good! No cringes, wonderful use of effects on vocals. Exciting stuff.

What the heck....let's try some übernitpicking: the snare roll at 4:04 sounds like a plain velocity sweep from 30 to 127 (or something like that). If you alter the velocities just a tiny bit (while maintaining the global sweep) you can get it more natural I think. A few months ago I've discovered the wonder of velocity paradiddles....(with different samples it can get even more natural). I know you're a freak who programs note by note, so this can't be a problem for you! :) What do I mean with velocity paradiddles? Program 16th triplets with velocities 50 33 36 55 30 60 58 25 62 28 30, you get the picture....

Try it sometime.

While playing along I noticed that some of the higher frequencies in the solo guitar part sound a little annoying at times...on headphones at least

BrettMckinney- Hey Brett. Thanks a lot bud. I'm gonna try and do some listening tonight, but I've got a lot of typing to do too. But I'll start out with your tune assuming I don't get pulled away, clawing and grasping my mouse and keyboard in a desparate....
As for your questions, I'll make another post with some methods and approaches either in this thread or a new one. I'll get back to you, maybe even before you read this one...

mixmkr- man I'm sorry if I misinterpreted you there. Sometimes I think I take music too seriously and I get a bit defensive. Thank you... I count on you as one of my sharpest critics.

smokepole- thanks for that link man! I created a shortcut and will probably check it this weekend when I can chill for a bit (theoretically). But I listened to this tune after reading what you said about inflections, and you're totally right. If I do plug the mic in for this one again, I'll be more conscious of it. bpoco- ahhh the bubbly synth! haha. It's foreshadowing. It's the first 6 notes of the chorus- "We're passing through slowly..." I knew I wanted that melodic theme in there, but I chose the actual sound after searching the banks for something omenous. Thank you caller from Chicago. Pedullist- WOW?...as in Whip-it-Out-Wednesday? Sorry is that just a States thing? Hey thanks for that suggestion. It's not a straight velocity sweep, it's more of a slow curve. But your suggestion is very intriguing. I've done like 4 rolls I think, and I can never get them the way I hear them. Your suggestion might do it for me. Thanks. That solo...ya it's a brain dart for sure. I keep forgetting that other people haven't trained themselves to ignore that like I have. I'll get that little bastard for sure. I'll show him who's boss. Thanks my man!

man, that one low harmony is haunting.......the quality of the voice there is awesome......it's like you can hear the vocal chords moving........the high harmony is sweet too.......do you have any suggestions for mixing harmony vocals? they sound great

very nice production......

I just want to say that this is a killer tune. I don't know if listening to your stuff gives me hope for the future or if it just makes me want to quit trying.
 
Sorry I'm late - been really busy with work, and didn't have time to read others' comments.

First - this is impecable and will fit fine with your other stuff. In fact, might make an interesting contrast. But your musical personality is in this so it should fit fine. Three listens and I can't find anything to criticize. Please mess up on purpose next time so that I can point something out and feel like I contributed;).

As far as the synth/guitar thing - you probably know I'm not a fan of synth (no one is even allowed to bring a synth into my house!). But you do seem to know how to work that synth tastefully. You had me fooled for a long time with the synth bass. I hate myself for saying this, but the synth stuff is fine and will fit along with all your more guitar oriented work.:D

B.Sab was correct when he said some great music has incoherent/un-understandable lyrical parts.This tune is no exception.The low end Vox seemeed a little loud during the 1st verse(In Headphones anyway).Better in the second.The bended note during the guitar solo @ 2:02 is a bit harsh.Mint drums,as usual.Cymbals sound great!The snare roll @ 4:04 is marginal.(I think you can do it better).My dad told me again tonight about how he...you know.damn you.

The mix: the thing, the big issue about homerecording is almost always EQ - stuff homers do is almost always darker than commercial stuff. In some cases, it's an issue because it's actually too dark, and in some cases it's only an issue if you think commercial stuff is some kind of standard to go by. I don't think that. I like this song - it's like standing in the shade on a hot day. It's like walking at night, but not in the city. Yeah, it's a bit like Floyd - and Floyd's stuff is often dark, right?

Maybe bring up the vocals when you're singing quietly. 1.5 dB?

It's acceptable - tweaks might make it a bit better, but I'd leave it as is. More would be obsessing probably.

It's also a very lovely song. Who'd want to return to normal anyway?
 
Very tasty use of those two percussion patches at the end of measures that end with two hits of some patch and then one of bell.

Very natural sound despite the heavy synth usage! Very cool!
 
This is fantastic man. I like the guitar better than the first version. Very Floydian feel to it. Great mix too. You and Sammi are starting to fall into the same school of production (I can think of a worse places to be:D :D ).
 
I don't understand - what's the same about the way they do things, aside from attention to detail and high standards of tracking and mixing? Their sound is really different.
