My song "The Nicest Way." Progressive theme.
Comments & critiques welcome.

Is that a drum loop/samples or played/tracked drums?

I'm sure everyone has a production idea that works for them, and the song can work as-is...but I can hear it with a bit more punch/edge. I think it would also sound real good if it rocked out a bit more, with maybe aslightly faster tempo.

Hey there! Drums are midi drums. Now I can't do much in way of changing tempo of this recording (too much time to change, but I'll take it into consideration playing live), but I'm interested in what exactly you're looking for or not hearing in the drum mix. I started with a single tracks for drums, but went back and added gated tracks (ie kick, snare, toms) and blended them together. There's a fine line between drums sitting exactly perfect, them too much in your face, and not enough in your face, so I worry about distracting drums (well distracting anything really).

I'm a guitarist, not a drummer so perhaps my ear is a bit bias ;). However, I do want to hear your ideas - needs punch & edge? Is it width left and right that's the issue or is it height top to bottom? What do you think?

When I say needs punch & edge...I'm mainly talking about the arrangement and production. Giving it a more up-tempo rock flavor instead of that laid back lounge lizard vibe. ;)

You have it at about 92 BPM...I'm hearing it at about 128 BMP (give or take a couple either way).
But again....it's just what I'm hearing and how I would do it. There's nothing specifically bad about how you have it, though it's kinda’ "plinky" sounding for my taste.
Even if you keep it at the current pace (though I truly recommend you try it faster)...I would still have a real drummer, lose that synth-piano patch and go for a real piano with some real organ maybe....and if you are guitar player, where's the guitars? :D

Did you ever see the movie "That Thing You Do"...where they originally were supposed to play the title tune real slow and laid back, and then the drummer kicks it into high gear and the crowd loves it and it goes on to become a one-hit-wonder....
..well, I think your song is kind hiding too, and really wanting to rock out, up-tempo.

Anyway...think about it...it's a good song either way.

Hey thanks a lot for breaking it down man! My real drummer is no longer with me because of an inability to show up to a gig on time. One of the main things I'd like to fix is that electric guitar solo that bridges to the end. I'd like it more up front and in your face. Unfortunately, living in an apartment, I can only turn up so much before I feel uncomfortable for being a loud obnoxious asshole. Considering using guitar rig for my next lead track.

I know exactly what you mean about the increased tempo. I can hear it. Especially the chorus part. The way the acoustic enunciates the beats in the chorus, I think, lends itself perfectly to an increase in tempo. Depending on the amount of cocaine used nights it gets played live will determine exactly how much faster it gets played :P:guitar: .

To give you some background, the song I had in mind when deciding how to approach this recording was Bob Dylan's Positively 4th St (ala Jerry Garcia). The music and lyrics contrast drastically, ironically. I wanted a similar vibe. The lyrics are dripping with sarcasm. The setting that I used to determine tempo for this was a guy strolling down the street.

Thanks again for really breaking it down. Its greatly appreciated. Its the difference between listening and LISTENING.
