The New Mac Mini. What do you think?

yes, the mac isn't super fast etc..........
but for ease of general use etc......they can and i emphasize can be easier to use. also check out how much less power they use. I checked out alot of computers and macs are some of the lowest out there. energy use should factor into total cost as well.......
would i buy one for a game machine? NO WAY! not what they're for.
mac mini would be fine for light demos, general surfing, stuff like that
otherwise if you have more powerful needs, look to something else.
everything has a place...........

Which Mac would you recommend for you sort of use? Which particular model etc?
 
My laptop is on its way out and am planning to buy a Mac Book Pro Aluminum 13" in November. Would this be OK for music stuff?

@ GarethC: That Macbook is certainly good for audio. How many channels do you track/playback at the same time?
 
I am a PC guy by trade, and I've been working on and/or supporting Windows desktops in one fashion or another for most of my career. I used to think the same thing about Macs that seems to be the prevalent opinion on this thread, but then I picked up a Mac Mini about a year and a half ago, and much to my surprise, I loved it. If I have to say why, it's simply that it just works. I don't have to spend any time tweaking anything. In my opinion, that's a testament to the fact that the OS is tied very closely to the hardware and the apps that run on the OS/hardware all play well together and don't cause me issues. That's it. I spent so much time with my PC-based recording setup troubleshooting various issues and wondering why things weren't working. Knock on wood, that doesn't happen when I'm recording in Logic on OSX. I also didn't have to spend any time tweaking my system or my app to make it functional. I installed Logic, plugged in my interface, and I've never looked back. No driver issues, no weird compatibility things to worry about, no hoops to jump through. Maybe it's just that I spend all day dealing with PCs so I really don't want to deal with them when I'm off the clock, but whatever it is, I'm not going back to a PC for my recording setup at home. I don't think performance ever comes into the equation for me and whether or not the graphics are up to this or that or the processor is this or that revision, blah, blah, blah. All of the Macs these days are powerful enough to handle anything I throw at them (granted, I'm not a gamer, but this is a RECORDING machine anyway!!! :)), so it's a non-factor. YMMV and all that...I just think the point is being missed to some degree...

I have never used a laptop that I have owned for music work, never felt confident enough with the ones I had . I am planning to purchase a Mac Book Pro Aluminum soon and if the audio is as good as you say cyrano I can start to use it.
 
its very good...Im finally getting used to the operating system and ive started quite large projects in Logic and the macbook handles them with ease...just got to wire it into my HD monitor as my eyesight isnt what it used to be...but Im going to try a full song in logic soon

though in truth its not outperforming my vaio, which runs vista (eek) but is as solid as a rock...i used it for three months while traveling and never had a problem with it, and it was a few hundred bucks less


it isnt brushed aluminum though :D
 
I really can't wait to get my hands on the MBP and see just what it can do. My GF loves her one to death. Video looks awesome on it and music is also excellent.
 
Going to upgrade her HD from 250GB to 750GB from Western Digital. That will keep her happy.
 
Have mine reserved and pick it up in 3 weeks, when I get paid. Can't wait to try it out. Managed to get a 1TB hard drive for my gf for $121 which is great.
 
well its just another computer in all honesty but for somethings its just blisteringly fast...transfering things like 8GB files takes a few minutes compare to a PC thats takes forever


dunno if thats important....i do like how it takes seconds to start up as well
