I am having a problem with Latency..... I am using Sonar 2.0 and softsynths such as Tassman, V-Sampler or Dreamstation. My problem is that when I go to lower the latency ( OPTIONS / AUDIO / LATENCY SLIDER BAR ), I can slide the bar only down to 62.5 msec.......

Why? I need it to go down below 10 msec for the DXI's......

I am using SoundBlaster Live! Value soundcard, Windows ME and AMD 1.4 ghz Athlon, 512 mb ram. Windows ME/2000/XP should have the same WDM drivers, right?

thanks

Maybe you don't have the WDM drivers installed for you SoundBastard card? If you look in Win ME's multimedia panel, under the "hardware" tab. It should say "WDM" after the listing for the soundcard.

If you were to spend the $150 or so, that it takes to get a soundcard somthing like the M-Audio Audiophile 24/96, or similar, you'll never look back. There's a major difference in sound quality between these and the SB. You're also guranteed to have lower latency, which is somthing you might have to work at to get from the SB.

Most people don't have any problems with having one of these cards installed along with the SB. Then you can still use the SB for monitoring-SoundFonts-games, etc...

Sorry.....that did'nt work.

For some reason, there is no "WDM" drivers listed in the route you speak of.

Where is the WDM driver setting on the SB Live ?

thanks

As Norbert suggested, it sounds like you don't have WDM drivers installed. To my knowledge they are not the same drivers for ME/2000/XP.

There used to be WDM drivers for WinME on Creative's web site. Don't know if they still have them posted, but you can try.

Also, you won't get below 10ms with an SBLive - even with WDM drivers. 10ms is the lowest setting possible with an SBLive, and you may find that Sonar won't run properly at that setting. Good luck though.

Simultaneous post, tcdave. :)

There is no "setting" on the SBlive, you have to get a copy of the WDM drivers. I think, however, that the SB drivers supplied with WinME are WDM. You can maybe try and do a driver update through Control Panel. Or you can try the Creative site as suggested before. Or try here

I downloaded the driver from Creative and my computer said that the downloaded driver was older than the one that I have already. So I did nothing. I went to that website you provided and I am not sure if that is the right thing to do either.

Still not sure.....I am however going to buy the TASCAM US-428 and will not be needing the SB Live. I am pretty sure that the tascam Audio portion of the US-428 has ZERO latency.

Any more ideas?

Thanks,

Zero latence on audio through USB-1 ?? HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH!!

sorry.... couldn't help myself...

To add somthing constructive to this post...

Before you buy that Tascam, do yourself a BIG favor and check out the forum for those, that Tascam has at their web site. Find out if you even have the system specs that'll be able to stand using the 482. Those things seem to be very unfriendly with non Intel chipset motherboards. There's also a .pdf file you can get from their web site, that'll tell you why the Intel chipset is the only one that uses the "Proper" or "True" USB protocols.

Last I checked, Tascam doesn't seem to give a damn about making drivers that will make the 482 more compatable with AMD based systems. If this is what you use, you'll probably have to get a seperate USB card to install in your computer. Tascam also recommends which one's of those use the USB spec. that they want to cram down your throat. ( I found it funny that EVERY USB device I have, worked fine... except for theirs.)

By computer standards, the 428 is getting pretty old. While Tascam won't make drivers that are more compatable with more computers, I believe their USB devices are going to quickly become dinosaurs.

I spent about a week of jumping through Tascam's hoops, trying to make a 428 fully functional on my computer. I took it back for a refund. Looking back on it, I shouldn't have wasted more that a day on it. That's become my attitude with almost all computer hardware. It's just not worth it. There's all kinds of other products out there, that'll plug in or hook up, that work first time out.

For less than a 428 costs, I ended up getting an 'Audiophile 24/96' soundcard, and a 'Doepfer Pocket dial'. Check out the Pocket dial. Continuous rotary knobs on a unit that uses feedback data from applications, beats the crap outta sliders that'll have your application settings jumping all over the place.

Good info to know.......

I did post on this BBS in the tascam section about the drivers from Frontier/tascam with the US-428 and I got no responses. I hear alot of great things about the 428. Either it works for you and you love it or you hate it.

And I must correct myself on the latency with the 428. The latency is 5.5ms........

i've got the tascam us-428 and am pretty happy with its responsiveness.

i use it with my laptop for "out of the house" recording.

i haven't noticed any horrific lag time (i am using WDM drivers), but I'm not getting 5.5ms latency.

I think you will find that the SB WDM drivers only provide low-latency under Windows 2000 /XP..........

I am using an Aardvark Direct Pro 24/96 which gives me 2.2msec latency with about 40 audio tracks.

$US 499 r.r.p.

Do yourself a favour and get rid of the SB card - you will be amazed at what a few more bucks means in terms of sound quality.

Ciao,

Q.
