The MP3 Clinic is obsolete in one respect.

For the record... Most of the stuff I post on here are in .wav format. I just upload them right to Soundcloud. It takes just as long as an mp3 (at my connection speed). And I don't know about you guys, but I'd feel embarrassed if I asked someone to listen to a 128 kbps mp3. That's like not even trying. And I never attach my files to my postings... That's just a hassle. The embedded Soudcloud player saves so much time. So, in essence, I treat you guys the way I'd like to be treated. By giving you high quality in a simple and efficient manor.

Ooops....
Taken straight from SoundCloud's FAQ:

SoundCloud's FAQ said:
Sometimes our transcoding system can create audio artifacts, as we transcode all tracks to 128 kbps mp3 for streaming playback

For the record, you can upload mp3's directly to this site and keep them as 320kbps. There is a file size limit, but don't remember what that is. 15meg or something. So an average size song should be okay.

Yeah, my understanding has always been that Soundclick and Soundcloud convert everything to 128 anyways, so that's what I always give 'em. Personally, I think both those players sound fine. I've never heard a mix of my own or others' where I thought it sounded bad because of the file type, but I know people claim that it can ruin a mix. I just don't hear it.

I think most listeners (even here in the clinic) want convenience. Some want maximum detail and are happy to deal with slow-loading, larger files. If you want to be thorough, offer them both I guess.

The embedded Soundcloud player looks cool and all, but then you have to open another tab to navigate the site while listening, otherwise it stops when you leave the thread. Personally, I prefer it when people post links to players that open up in a new window so I can continue reading the forums while listening to their track. Dropbox seems to have all of those angles covered.

Yeah soundcloud is a nice site, and embedding their player is convenient, but their player hammers song clips just like any other streamer does. They pretty much all default to 128 unless you pay for their premium service. I hear the difference. For my own stuff, I'll put up a soundcloud clip for anyone that wants to listen that way, but I usually include a 320 version as well so people can critique with better accuracy if they wanna DL it.

Oh. I didn't know that! JESUS! It doesn't sound like 128... Am I that deaf?! Or just ignorant? Every 128 mp3 I've ever produced sounds like utter dog crap. But, for some reason, Soundcloud doesn't sound that way to me. I apologize for my dumbness.

I think it's psycho-acoustics, really. You want to believe it sounds better so it does. And there might be something with the encoders they use that sound better than the encoders you use. That might account for the difference in sonic quality.

I don't think you need to apologize and, um, sorry for putting you on the spot like that. :D

Ahh lets just make everyone happy and rename it the "WAV clinic" instead.

:p

You talking about Reverbnation?

We (mjhamil) just uploaded a mix at 320 direct to this site. I'm not keen on giving away downloads but I try and avoid Soundclick 128 now for mix reviews. I can definitely hear a large drop in quality between 320 an 128

No, I said soundcloud like two or three times.

Yes, you did, but your written communications are sadly less clear than your mixes. You include the 320 version on Dropbox. Got it. Thanks for clarifying. :D

I'll try harder this time. Can you do the 320 version on Dropbox using the Free plan?

Yes, you absolutely can. They have some overall account-wide limit on file size, but I've never reached it. you can upload pretty much any size individual track. I used dropbox for an 11+ minute track in WAV format no prob.

thanks for the info about soundcloud. i didnt realize it played at 128. i uploaded wav files and thought it streamed vav files. still sounds good though.

Dropbox is basically cloud storage. You can put anything in there, video, audio, word documents, text files. It doesn't care....

I think we've found the real problem - Perhaps the thread dates should be in larger font?

This thread's only a week old.

Now thread necros in the marketing forum, THAT is a problem.

Yeah, I was actually joking about something going on in here last night.

Someone was resurrecting a whole bunch of 5-10 yr. old threads in here noting each time (with apparent surprise), "I can't find the file", "your song won't play", etc. in an effort to amass 10 posts.
