ok, dont think people ask this every day:

i was the screamer in a band but i'm leaving them for a better band (happens all the time, no?)
but i'm the guy with all the equipment, so the singer doesn't have anything now (call him a parasite)

of course he doesn't care about music so he wants to spend as LITTLE money as possible, all he needs is a preamp for the rehearsal room

we dont need a mixer, no eq, compression,
he got my amp and speakers, all he needs is an XLR input and volume control

what kinda of dirt cheap solutions are there?
doesn't behringer make just a preamp with NO other functions?

and honestly, we dont care about quality here, it just has to produce some sound, but it also has to be real small and portable

Sorry im not going to answer your question but i also need the same thing. I have a mixer but only has 4 pre amps in it and the rest of the chanels dont have phantom power leaving them so to record drums i will have at least 6 mics. 3 toms 1 snare bass and 2 overheads and they will all need phantom power so i also need suggestions on mic pre amps. i just really need something that will provide phantom power to 2 mics. so probably 2 mic preamps. Thanks

m-audio audio buddy. cheap, 2 mics, phantom power. works.

Seriously, just buy the Rane MS-1b and be done with it! It's an ultra simple mic pre with XLR in/out, volume control, and a 48v phantom power switch - that's it! It sounds really good for the price - plenty of clean gain. You can use it on a wide variety of sources and it's always very dependable. All the money in these units went into quality components and not extra junk typically found in low-level preamps.

They cost roughly ~$100 used or $150 new.

the absolute cheapest preamp? That would be the Behringer MIC100 preamp... its actually pretty decent for a $40 preamp... single channel, portable...

Nothing from Berhinger is ever decent.

Actually, I now have Diffusion's old MIC200 :D. it's actually not all that bad. I was going to gut it for the housing and hardware for a DIY preamp project, but I haven't had the time. It does okay as is, for the price.

Sorry about the hijack, but do you happen to have photos of the innards of the mic200?

I'm still waiting for the Behringer product where they pay you to buy it. $39.95 with a $50 rebate.

I'd go with the M-Audio. My DMP-3 has been great and kicks butt for the price.
