Thanks!
Robinson is one of my dearest friends. I met him over 5 years ago, just after I moved to Santa Barbara. He is one of the best, most honest, sweetest and "realest" people I've ever met.
His "main" instrument is Dulcimer, but he plays anything really, he is also an incredible artist with pen and ink, in writing as well as in image.
When Robinson was in his early 20's he became an art teacher - at San Quinton prison - where he only tought lifers and worse, if there is such a thing.
Robinson made the CD as a release from the parting of his father. The whole thing is a journey if you listen to it carefully, altough delivered with a large dose of humor.
Amongst musicians the Matrix has gotten a kind off cult following. People send mail, write, ordering the CD from all over the globe, and all of them are musicians. Cool!
When I met him his 'studio' was a small garage / basement with a 6'8" ceiling (where the CD was recorded). In a corner was a mini grand, in the middle a drum kit, and in the other corner a rack with 1 ADAT, 1 DA, a 32/8 Mackie, a hand build pre, 1 effects processor, a CD player and a cassette deck. He was busy recording people 7 days a week, after he made his CD everyone wanted to work with him.
First thing I did was lend him some good microphones and other bits and pieces, and ever since he's been building things up slowly. He's now moved to a place called Beagle Studios in Santa Barbara, where he's renting most of the place, with good size tracking rooms and a decent control room. He now records on
a Mackie D8B (my partner and I pulled some strings and we got it for him at wholesale cost), 4 20 bit ADATS (which will go shortly), sometimes he uses the studio's 2" machine as well, he's build-up an amazing mic collection, including 2 converted Neumanns, has some Grace preamps, clocks it with a Lucid GEN, and gets some amazing results. I think one of these days you will see some hits with his name on them as engineer or engineer / producer. He has already had a couple of hits in Japan with a band called Summercamp, songs he recorded as their demos, but they couldn't improve them in the "real" recordings (he never got credit for them - did from the band, not the record company - lesson here - CONTRACTS!!!!! - whatever you do - put it in writing!!! Recording a Japanese top 10 hit for 50 bucks as a demo? Very wrong!)
Robinsone is the only person who has unlimited, anytime access to all my gear, and I do to his. Amazing possibilities, amazing how nice it is to make agreements with honest people.
He's going to do another CD soon, all the songs are written. If you want a copy of this one, I'm sure he's got a bunch left, so ask me.
