This is much, much better than the original mix. The jangly guitars do need taking out, slightly.

Sounds good Ray - the intro jangly guitar is way less than the base track you sent me. When I did a test mix it was really bright. I couldn't do anything as it was part of the backing track but wondering what did you do to reduce the jangly-ness in this mix? (Is that a word)

Gerry,
I added a little reverb to the master buss and that seemed to darken things a little so I left it there.
Seems no one's particularly interested so if you're happy with this stage we'll call it done.

I thought the drums sounded very good. Greg probably did them right?

Little vocal click at about :59 on the word "coming".

The bass part was cool. The sound was very nice too, except for the intro. It was a little loud and boomy in the intro. Kick gets a little loud in spots too.

The rhythm guitars sounded a little chorusy. Is there also a little intonation problem too? Something was a little off.

Vocal tone sounded nice.

I liked the lead guitar sound a lot. I'd turn back the reverb quite a bit if it were me. It was well played too.

It's probably too late now, but I'll just add some observations:

1 The kit sounds real nice
2 I'd prefer the bass guitar to have more bottom end.
3 I'm not sure what I think about the jangly guitars. At the start, when there is just the single one, it sounds, well, jangly and a bit abrasive. When the other one comes in and you get the big stereo spread, it makes sense. The after a while, it starts to become intrusive . . . so maybe there is a point in the song where they need to stop and give the ears a rest.
4 The lead, given its role, would benefit, in my view, from having a bit more presence. I like the sound, but it seems a bit squashed. As it is, it would be perfect if it was doing fills while vocals or something else ran over the top.

The musical elements are all there, but I can imagine it sounding a bit more dynamic with some playing with the mix, and maybe the arrangement within the mix..

Replying to the full vocal version of the opening post. I don't like the mix much, harsh, sounds compressed over the top. But I really, really dig the song. The vocals are great. It's sorta Bowie-ish to me, I like it!

TripleM,
I'll look into the click at 0.59. It's not there in the master so may be an artifact.
Gecko ZZed,
I'll have a fiddle around and see what my ears tell me.
MysticNetherlan,
The vocal version is mixed and professionally mastered so I'm not going to remix it, sorry. There's almost no compression on the track at mix & mastering stages. It may be a soundcloud artifact or something about the old version of Cakewalk Proaudio 9.3 I used. Thanks for the kind words re the song.

Sorry Ray, time's been against me of late. The update is much better - tone is a better fit and the lead sounds like it belongs in the rest of the mix. Could possibly do with a little less overdrive as it's a bit fizzy in places, but maybe that's just me? Sounding good mate :)

Man that's a great drummer.

I think it's pretty good. I'm not crazy about the lead tone. It doesn't really gel to me. It sounds like it's sitting on top instead of in the mix. It's a little too overdriven, too much effect, too low-middy, for the song IMO.

Damn, sorry I missed this ray. I at least wanted to pop in and say this is a nice song. Somebody mentioned Bowie above, I can totally agree...I hear that influence in here somewhere. A little Carlos Alomar in the lead guitar. Drums sound great, so does the bass. And I like the play between the left/right guitars and their reverb.

The mix is a little dark to me but everything is in balance. I like the texture that the lead guitar adds. It gets a little hairy every once in a while, but it's a nice contrast to how smooth everything else is.

Song is really good. If I'm going to nitpick, I'll bitch about the bass tone. It wasn't bad, but I thought it lacked attack and something else that I don't know how to describe. Good playing all around. The singer has a great voice, but something about the way he sings... is "stiff" the word? When I hear this singing I picture a guy who always sits up straight in a chair and never slouches. Which I guess is a good thing, as he will be less likely to have back problems in the future.

Nice work.
