Just remixed this stereo version of a surround sound mix. All comments are welcome, and thanks in advance.
 
Kevin, I really like this. I have no suggestions -- I just like your unique sound, well-constructed lyrics, and textured orchestration. Nice work!

I hear all sorts of things on this site. Some are . . . well . . . I don't comment on those as a rule, and listening to them I'm encouraged to consider posting some of my work. Then there are some that represent really significant and impressive talent. When I hear songs like this (and FTG's beautiful work and of course, anything by the amazing Greg), that I think, no, I certainly won't post my songs -- I don't want to embarrass myself. :)

Note to the rest of HR: If I haven't posted about your music, it doesn't mean I don't like it. Most likely, I haven't heard it yet -- I don't have a lot of time to listen to everything. I listened to Kevin's piece because I was grabbed by the title -- simple, yet powerful and evocative.

Although I've sort of gotten away from doing it, I used to build my productions right out in the open ... warts and all -- right from scratchpad status. I counted on the input from these boards to guide the direction of the production and help me think of things I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I encourage anyone who thinks, "This doesn't sound good enough to post." to post it anyways. So long as one can take constructive criticism with an open mind, the participants on this board went through the same learning curve, and at one time didn't have the finesse or knowledge they now possess. The assembled knowledge alone is formidable, and is an amazing resource pool.

I don't know what I would have done w/o the likes of Paul (Dobro), Chris (Mixmkr), Greg (Greg), Steve (Trip) and others (forgive me if I didn't mention your name, but you know who your are) who at some time or another shined the light on areas of needed improvement that I would never have caught working in isolation (as I mostly do).

Some times a thick skin is required, as comments can be painfully blunt ... but if one considers even a biting comment only as information, they too can instruct.

This is not something I would have expected to like, seems to far away from everything I listen to. I loved it though!

I can't offer anything in the way of mix, it's above my level. Awesome track though and thanks for sharing it.

You're welcome, P. Could you tell the female singer was a synth?
 
Something didn't sound completely natural about her voice, the way the words cut but I just thought it was someone who didn't have English as her first language.
 
You've still got the vocaloid! :D

I can't find the old mix of this that you posted before right now (must have lost the mp3 somewhere), so I can't really compare the two and tell how much of a difference there is.

This mix sounds pretty good though.

Edit:
Oh. The synth solo at the end is new, isn't it? That sounds pretty cool. Might be a little quiet for the main melodic voice though.
 
I have Vocaloid -- it's useful for trying out harmonies (though I can do just as well with "oooo" and "aaaah" samples", but it still sounds artificial.
 
You've got to work VERY hard to get Vocaloid to sound "natural" ... and as Polarity noted, you still can't completely eradicate the odd "accent" inherent in the program.

It is! ... but there are multiple lines going ... and so the blend I was going for is more of a collage of sound rather than a strict lead line.
 
Very nice-The vocal track is excellent-real strong performance. I like the build up of the song and the pacing in general though the last synth section goes on a bit. The individual sounds are good the guitar sounds a bit canned and the drums seem to be missing some body but these are personal nitpicks, the song still comes across well because of the vocal. I like the female voice almost sounded like Nico. It's funny as i'm typing this i'm looking at an ad from amazon for theremins, seems like you have a theremin type sound in the last solo section or it would fit there for sure. Anyway enjoyed the song.

Agreed, Strat. I think some of the loss of "body" results from the fact that this is actually a surround sound mix -- and this is the stereo bounce down. The trade off to doing things that way is that there is a unique spatial impact. Everything sounds a bit more "open".

It's an interesting juxtaposition to mix in surround and try to make it also sound good in stereo.

Wow-So you have a 3 in front 2 in back mix situation? Well I guess you must...So I guess your positioning must be critical for this-are you in the middle of all these speakers? Don't know much about 5.1 just curious.

Yes ... and a subwoofer ... which is what throws me when I switch to just stereo.
 
Yeah, this one's either in the bag or near enough for me not to be able to fault it. I've just realized something which has nothing to do with this song. I'd really like you hear you sing gently on a tune. You love to belt it out, but I bet you could do a quiet one really well. Tell you what... you do a quiet one, and I'll do a belter. :D
 
If the average listener were paying the average amount of attention to the female vocal part, they'd probably think it was a person. But there's a phasiness to it and some enunciation isn't exactly right. But for the typical listener, it's real.

I like the guitar parts on this. they change up nicely. they sound good too.

I don't have any issues with anything. Only a personal taste thing - I didn't like the sound of that "lead synth." Actually I didn't care for a couple of those synth sounds. Just me though.

I thought this was really good.

And no pops. :)

Synths are funny ... they can sound very cheesy and dated ... so I try to take great care in choosing sounds that are distinct and ... call it "classic". I do understand that no matter what I choose, the tone of a synth may not appeal to all. Thanks for the comments though, bud!
