I know this was done in a BBC studio, but does anyone have any idea how it would have been recorded? Could a similar sound be achieved on a cassette portastudio (tascam 488)??
You could try, but the transient response will be lower and the tape noise will be much higher.
I have noticed that when most people are talking about getting something to 'sound' like something else, they actually want it to 'feel' like it. That is do-able on a 4 track. Getting the sound of a bunch of (probably) Neumanns feeding (probably) Neve preamps into (probably) a 1 inch 4-track machine in a state of the art (at the time) room run by the top professionals of the day will not happen on a cassette 4-track in your rehearsal spot.
Very true, I suppose it is the 'feel' that I'm after. In which case, < this should be achievable on an 8 track but then there's only me and a drummer - so it would be recording bass and drums, then guitar, then lead guitar, then vocals...
