thats why they sound so good... :)

Awesome, Greg!

I'm heading out to the golf course and I have a feeling that I won't be able to get this out my head now. ;)

That's a compliment! :)

Greg, got some pics of your kit, and how you mic it? I'm still learning, and like to see different ideas.

60's guy - Thanks man. Good luck on the golf course. :)

Dogman - I don't have any recent pics of it mic'd up and they're not set up right now to take pics (gig tonight). I can describe it though. It's a pretty basic setup. It's a very old Rogers 5-piece kit and everything is close mic'd with 2 overheads for 7 tracks total. I use a CAD pro 7-pc drum mic kit. The snare and tom mics clip to the rims and I point them at the center of the batter heads. The capsules are about and inch from the head surface and about an inch inside the rim towards the center of the head. The overheads are set up using the "recorderman" technique at 2 & 1/4 stick-lengths from the snare center. I use Pinstripes on the toms and keep them tuned pretty standard (the reso and batter head at the same pitch) with no muffling. I gate the toms in the computer to kill the ring, if there is any. The snare batter is an Emperor X reverse dot. I like a flat thud 70's rock snare sound. When recording, I use a small "Richie Ring" to take some of the ring out of the snare so I get a nice dry "thwack". The kick uses Aquarian super-kick heads, standard tuning, with no muffling inside the drum. The reso head is vented, so I stick the kick mic in there pointed right at the beater spot, about 4-6 inches away. I use felt beaters. If I'm recording something pretty fast with a lot of 8th notes on the hat, I'll mic the hats with a 57 to get that crisp "tss-tss-tss-tss" Ramones closed hi-hat sound. But, usually the hats get picked up in the O/H's. With all that done, all the mics are run to the Firepod, and then into Cubase for whatever else needs to be done.

I'll take some pics next time I have them set up.

This is kick ass!!! I love the song Lola and you have given it, some much needed ballz.

The intro immediately says this is going to be a driven cover...

A little acoustic interweaving here and there...nice

I especially love the guitar 'plunks'(reminds me of violin plucking)... or whatever they are called I hear at :24 increase in volume at :27 to :38...! Again at 2:35-2:45....The tone gets me all excited!

It sounds like the same guit (because of tone) used in the short interlude solo at 1:16 that steps out front. Is it?

The guitar axe solo beginning at 3:16 all the way out to the end....definitely needs to be more out there in front..more defined behind the vox(maybe it is the other guit that is eating the lead up..?)... and really start screaming at 3:35 to explode like a banshee before the fadeout....because to my ears the axes are the fire in your cover version ....your vocals the story...and the drums and bass the pulse. But that is just me and my bossiness coming out :D

The guitar solo with the tone used makes chills course my spine....

The guitar tones you chose, also brings a flavour of Foghat's tones and the outro really tastes of it to memory.

I like your vocals and the backup harmony is great...even sounds female in a few places...oh looooola...

The drums are spot on...maybe brought up just a tad...? The crash sounds good and the hats too. Your rolls are great! I like how the kick seems to meld into it all.

The Bass melds to my ears too... if you listen for it, you will hear how it is keeping the bottom end tight and great tone....but if not listen for it, may not notice it that much.

I want to download the song to keep, but can't at moment...hope you will keep this so I can get it from you a bit down the line.

Kudos Greg! Your wife made a wise suggestion for ya!

True :)

For those of you, who do not know...

LOLA

I met her in a club down in old soho
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like cherry-cola [lp version:
Coca-cola]
C-o-l-a cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said lola
L-o-l-a lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well Im not the worlds most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight she nearly broke my spine
Oh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Well Im not dumb but I cant understand
Why she walked like a woman and talked like a man
Oh my lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well we drank champagne and danced all night
Under electric candlelight
She picked me up and sat me on her knee
And said dear boy wont you come home with me
Well Im not the worlds most passionate guy
But when I looked in her eyes well I almost fell for my lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

I pushed her away
I walked to the door
I fell to the floor
I got down on my knees
Then I looked at her and she at me

Well thats the way that I want it to stay
And I always want it to be that way for my lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Girls will be boys and boys will be girls
Its a mixed up muddled up shook up world except for lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Well I left home just a week before
And Id never ever kissed a woman before
But lola smiled and took me by the hand
And said dear boy Im gonna make you a man

Well Im not the worlds most masculine man
But I know what I am and Im glad Im a man
And so is lola
Lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola
Lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola lo-lo-lo-lo lola

Wow, thanks a lot True. I really appreciate you taking the time to listen and give such in-depth feedback. :)

For the guitars, theres 2 acoustic tracks that run through the whole song and 5 electric tracks alltogether - including the lead. 2 of the electric tracks are low-gain and pretty low in the mix just to tie the rhythms together. The other 2 are are pretty juiced and played a little differently to give it some "power". The lead tone is pretty much the same as the "power" rhythms but with some mild flanger added. The "plunks" you mentioned are done with the louder "power" rhythm setting on the louder track while on the quieter rhtyhm track I'm just doing simple palm mutes underneath it.

I had an internal struggle with the end solo thing. I couldn't decide whether to blast it through or make it subtle. With me screaming "lola" over and over during the last part of the song, I thought it might be too much to have a solo blazing over everything. Maybe I was wrong. I'll go back and play with it some and see if I can get to shine through better without screwing everything else all up.

Once I get it all sorted, I can email you an copy if you'd like. Just PM me your email address.

Thanks again. :)

Do you have free downloads set up on this track? I want it too... :)

You do have it enabled. I'm D/L'ing now, if that's OK.

Plus I think you are right about keeping the solo subdued at the outro. It sounds like it's supposed to.

Great job.
