Just listening to this on Pandora right now, so maybe this is an Internets thing, but in hearing this tune...it seems massively compressed to me...being a Newb...I thought this another great opportunity to post over here, and see what others thought about this mix.

I like the song, and I like the overall sound of it, but listening as an engineer, and not as a musician...I hear flatness. Is that compression on the entire mix?

It must be pandora, that's a pretty well mixed song. There's definitely a lot of compression on the drum, I hear some of that tactful pumping that you hear a lot in that noisy dance-rock, but the guitars and bass sound just as compressed as any other song. However, particularly on the instrumental part after the first chorus, you can hear some of that drum compression taking an effect on the synth and some of the other instruments, but I have a feeling this was on purpose for effect.

Mr. Brightside is a great song and it has been mixed for commercial radio, so the compression will be way higher than other genres.

I know that big acts get a rock mix, a pop mix, an alternative mix etc. totaling at around 3-5 mixes so that they can spin the track on different radio stations with the compression etc. still fitting in line.

Unless you are paying for Pandora access (premium account) the sound quality is reduced for efficient streaming. If you listen to that track through good headphones directly from a good quality MP3 or better still, from the CD, you'll hear a nice, rich, dynamic mix job. There is a lot of compression on the song, but that's what pretty much that whole CD calls for.
