The Joys of Cubase SE Compression

Hello everyone:

Just purchased Cubase SE, and am trying to get to grips with the compressor plugin. Although it seems to have many of the same settings as the reason compressor, (yes...I was one of those fools who loaded entire vocal takes into the sampler cos I liked the sound of Reason's compressor), it seems to react in quite a different way.

I can still never get quite the desired effect. I like the sound of punchy, quite overcompressed vocals, but Cubase SE's interface confuses me.

Can anybody suggest optimum compressor settings for vocals in this package, (indeed, in general for drums, gtr, bass, etc).

Mike - also have a look at Endorphin on the digital fishphones site.

The dynamics processer that comes with Cubase SE has many shortcomings - can't remember what they are, 'coz it's ages since I opened it, but I remember finding it pretty useless.

For not very much money, the DB Audio compresser is highly tweakable and has very useable sidechains (also it's British ;)) http://www.db-audioware.com/dbd.htm
 
Wowee, thanks for links! The "dynamics" plugin really hasn't given me the sort of results I wanted.
 
Dwnloaded all that stuff. Using the fishphones De-Esser and the classic compressor - (compressor interface is the most like my outboard berhinger thingy).

Presets are nice. "Vocal Definition" one is nice, but it certainly makes those "P"'s pop out of the mix. Nothing that 10 minutes of spike correction won't fix though.

Either way, it's all better than the "dynamics" plugin that comes with Cubase SE.

Anyone else recommend any other free VST plugins, or is there a link on this forum to an existing topic on this?

I honestly think the ones scrubs posted links to are the best freebies out there. If there's better then they are very well kept secrets.

You could scour KVR but do remember to report back on any others you like. ;)

Scrubs and Kevin definitely have it right. The other free Kjarhaus stuff if quite excellent too - esp. the reverb, IMHO.

ooo, windows only, boo, that compressor looked nice.

I have used the dynamics one and I just click through the presets for a start and then tweak it, although I haven't logged many hours on cubase yet

+1, Especially the limiter. I love that limiter.
 
I downloaded these plugins but there's no .exe file to install them. I refreshed my effects list in Cool Edit Pro but they still don't show up. What gives? Is it exclusive to Cubase?
 
you need to drag them into your plugin folder or assign the folder there in to your effects list. Can't remember right off but if they are VST, you can't use them with Cool edit pro without a Wrapper. Spin audio makes one but it never seemed to function properly for me when I was still using Cool Edit.

Also you don't get an .exe file you get a .dll file which as wireneck says you just drag and drop into you vst folder.
