The HR Bi-Monthly Recording Challenge Poll

Since the huge success of the 1.5 challenge, the consensus is we want more, so there are the ideas we hashed over for now. The plan is that the poll item that gets most votes wins for the March 5-10th entries. If there is a significantly close tie, we might do a multiple choice. The options are:

-cover another clinic members song
-a recording using no effects of any kind
-all write a song based on the same lyrics (to be provided from somwhere!)
-tribute to a group or artist, such as the Beatles, Hedrix, Dylan, Neil Young, etc.
-something live--no overdubs
-"Hard & Heavy
-unplugged
-one particular cover tune
-a recording using only one mic (multiple tracks, of course!)
-collaboration
-drum circle--a collab using only percussion
-no real drums--you have to make your own sounds with other stuff
-write a song in 2.0 hours--take your time with the recording

I voted "do a cover-in a new style"-seems most applicable to everybody-regardless of age,location or genre (and the one I might be able to talk my bandmates into..). But I think covering another clinic members song is a great idea...hope somebody tries it regardless...

Providing you have a written agreement between yourself, and the member you are covering, you wouldn't have a problem.

Chances are you wouldn't without a written agreement either, but the way copyright law works, you must be careful, especially this day and age.

I had my songs covered a few times by people here and it was amazingly cool.......

Waldo makes a good point about the covers. Does anyone know the legality for sure? I thought once a song was released, anybody could cover it. If there is money involved, then its a different matter. Ah, but I'm no lawyer, so if anybody knows the law here, step up.

If they choose to sue your ass for covering them, and you didn't ask permission (and get it in written form), they can.

I'm not sure if this is necissarily correct. I took a class that covered a lot of this subject matter (recording rights etc.). As I recall, once a song is recorded and released, it is free game for anyone to record and/or perform. If you sell a copy of a recorded cover, you owe $.08 per copy to the owner of the publishing rights.

This keeps someone from recording someone else's unreleased song before them, but that is about it. This is what keeps people like Weird Al in business. If you remember a few years back, Coolio was pretty upset with Weird Al for making fun of 'Gangsta's Paradise'(they had an interview in some behind the music), but legaly, there wasn't much he could do to stop it.
