A BIG Thank You to drstawl.

This is the first song on our CD from my band The Hand Merchants. It was recorded about three years ago when the best gear was 2 AGK C1000 (old versions), dbx 266 compressor, Mackie SR24-4, 2 ADAT-XT (one borrowed), and a rented DAT and Event 20/20bas monitors I'd never used before. It was all mixed in two days.

If you like it, please cast your ballot via e-mail for The Hand Merchants under the Folk catagory for the SAMMIES (Sacramento Area Music Awards) at www.newsreview.com/sacto/sammies/2000/
if you have not done so already.

Hope you all enjoy this,

Recording Engineer

By the way, I was both the drummer and engineer at the same time. And that's not good.

There wasn't two sets of my post and reply before; psyco-phenomena.

Allen:
I was going to e-mail you this, but it wouldn't let me, so...

Thank You for the vote and the kind words. It's nice to know that we're not making music just for our own enjoyment.

As far as what songs to leave out, one I know you can leave out is Hand Merchant's Tale (luckily since it is "a modem buster") because that's one of the two I'd like to submit on the compilation; you know, what I posted on the BBS regarding two different production styles I'd like to demonstrate. That is if there's enough room and people would also think it would be another learning tool example.

Thanx again for helping us spread the sound of our music both by putting our music on the web and casting a vote.

Hey R.E., yea really like that tune, very good mix too, wished our mixes sounded half that good, loved the acoustic guitar in this one, it really sounded natural. great mix, great tune!vocals were great too! also went and cast my vote for you guys,Rock on cat..

David:
Glad you enjoyed it. Stay-tune for other songs off the CD if others enjoy this one as well; gotta get 'em to even bother spending the time downloading it first though.

Hey, and Thank You for the vote.

Note to everyone: There has been so many people contributing to this forum lately that I've forgotten who I've listened to and who I haven't, so if you haven't heard from me yet, I may have overlooked you, sorry, it's not deliberate!

Hey RE, great recording, I especially like the bass guitar. I'll have to go vote for you guys. Good work!

CMiller:
Thank You; whether or not you do get a chance to cast your vote.

That's a really great mix. I wish I could get mine to sound half that good!

Adam a.k.a. Fender:

Thank You. It was a Digitech Studio Quad V2 (older version and the one w/o the wall wart). Don't really remember, but I think I did a little editing of the various verbs I used; which were really only 2 or 3.

How coulds I get a copy of the CD? I really dug you guys!

One thing...
I whish that the drums were just a small hair more in front. I really like your drumming here. Don't be so modest with it- I know that it's "folk" but that just means you gotta break the rules all the time. case in point Ani DiFranco. She rules!

one more thing- the acoustic guitar seemed a little spongey- difinitly the sound or the instrument not the recording or mic right? What kinda guitar?

As far as getting a hold of a CD, just e-mail me an address to send it to. I'll ship it out on Monday; I have other things to ship out as well anyway. Don't mention anyhing about money as long as you share it with your friends and others and direct them to my band's e-mail address jwbros@jps.net if they'd like to purchase their own copy for say, $5US + shipping (just made that up on the spot).

As far as the recording, the drums are in the back of the mix because I don't like the way they sound (recording wise). Not because drums are suppose to be mixed in the rear in regards to Folk music. Another thing is that the entire CD was mixed in two days about (16 hours total) since we rented a DAT and monitors I had never used before). The drums and mix were doomed at day one.

Also, the sound of the acoustic guitars (two different players and guitars), it was the mics and recording. The rhythm was a Santa Cruz and the lead was a Martin (I think); I don't know the model numbers, but both are beautiful sounding live. I miked them both in ORTF stereo configuration with two C1000s (the older versions; the best mics I had at the time) into my Mackie SR24-4 (don't have it any more), into a dbx 266 at a 2:1 ratio, and into an ADAT-XT. Actually, I'm very satisfied with the acoustic guitars on this recording for the gear I had. Although, it was pointless to record them in stereo since we just panned them in order to help distiguish between the two acoustics.

Under the situation we had then, the drum sound, quality, and mix is what I hate most about our CD. But what do you want when the drummer is trying to drum and engineer at the same time?

P.S. We'll be starting to track for the next album in a month or two. We've evolved though. Still, the same great song writing from the same person. Still, the same four members. And you'll definetly recognize that it's The Hand Merchants.

I just realized. I probably should have e-mailed you all this instead of posting it on the BBS. I appologize to all the BBS members.
