ametth, man thats horrible you saying that. Its now in future listeners subconscious that two is bad.

I think that people should be smart enough to listen and vote before reading the thread.

Wow! This has been a great thread. I've listened & made my choice - You'll eventually read my comments over @ Q's place.

Sorry, but I feel that some of you didn't have your "listening ears" on for this one. My opinion runs against the grain somewhat & of course, I'm right. :D

i thought B sounded better than C....C seemed like the unmastered one........B sounded mastered but not well......A was pretty nice....if anyone one listens to me they are crazy, so if the results are tainted, oh well....

btw, almost half of the people DIDNT pick A as the best sounding....which only helps prove my theory : this nation has a serious drug problem....

listened at 320kbps....i used Britney Spears "Hit Me Baby One More Time" as a reference...well, actually I was just jerking off to the video, but it sounded good.....

hahaha. Actually, right now there are more than half who did not pick A. It all depends on your reference., and sorry to say, but your reference(brittney) cant be worse.

I'll shut down the poll and post who is who in a few days. Unless my host freaks out sooner!!!

Perhaps you should wait untill I bring in my results as well, or else it might look as if knowing before who is who will make a difference in the judging. But it's up to you as it will take me about 2 weeks from today ( If I ever get the CD in the mail from you in time).

I voted, but I have to say that I had heard the material before, so I knew which one was the original.
To avoid too much pain ;) - I listened once to about 12 seconds of each version, on my cheapass computer speakers, not on monitors.
In my opinion there is one version which stands out head and shoulders as one done by someone "in the know", which will, beyond any question, be Bruce's.

Dobro,
Do like I do (at home). Start the download before you go to sleep. Wake up, files are there!

I down loaded the 160 versions at home and this morning I downloaded the monkey on a t1 at work, different sound system than home....my "opinion" stands the same. Being someone of the faith though I thought the material was...well different than what I would call Christian Rock, more of a RnB I thought, I played in a Christian Metal band for a few years so Im probably biased. After listening to the mix I feel better about myself :0)

Peace,
Dennis

sjoko2,

please you MUST tell us which one you voted for when this is over.

Some questions I got: (from atomictoyz, but I think everyone else is interested in the answers)

So "Q" are you going to post the techniques and equipment used in the "mastering" process?

Chess and Bruce both sent me some great notes as to what each of them did. I didn't post them, because they would've unblinded you to the samples. I will post them at the end, when I close the poll.

And does the Winner of the poll get something other than respect, what happens to the loser, will they be forbidden access to the mixing/ mastering part of the bbs?

There were no stakes in this challenge, merely an educational process.

We should do this more often :0) Maybe next time I can get into it myself ;0)

I think so too, although it takes up a bit of everyone's time. Thanks to everyone involved for giving the time to help, and thanks to everyone giving the time to listen and comment.

Actually, I think a mix-off would be a pretty good exercise as well. I know it has been discussed by Ed (Sonusman) in the clinic, but I haven't seen it go down yet.

IMO most Homerec'ers need to learn more about mixing. (Speaking personally, other than this challenge, I've been ignoring mastering, considering it to be something beyond me. When I have a few years of mixing experience, then I may begin to focus a bit on the mastering process...)

I will gladly tell you which one I voted for, if you like I'll tell the person who organised it via email, so you'd know I'm not cheating.

I think there will be some cool lessons in this whole excersize :)

Saaaaaaaaaayyyyy...

this topic and all the hubbubbery about christian rock sounds vaguely familyeeyar, not to mention the mastery commentation

hmm...

sjoko,
Go ahead and hit me with a PM or email, I'll add you comments to my compiled list of comments from others.

Khomputewr,
Any similarities you see between this thread and any others on this BBS (other than the "Mastering in SF" thread) are PURELY coincedental. Quite remarkable, but coincedental.

Alright! I voted. Looking forward to the outcome because I could use the education :(

Without listening to much of any of that, it's clear to me which is the original, but the other two seem close. I'm listening through computer speakers, and not my monitors, but really it's hard for me to tell that much of a difference between what I think are the two mastered versions. Of course, I didn't want to listen to more than a few seconds of each... so I might have missed something in different sections of the song that was obvious. I'm very interested now to see what equipment, techniques, and how much time each spent mastering this.

I'm not exactly sure how to classify this song either, but it's not Christian Rock... or any kind of rock for that matter. You gotta put the word Country in there somewhere.

Seems almost obvious to me, don't read if you don't want to be influenced (why would you listen to me anyway?)

A is sensible mastering job, B is not good mastering job, C is original.

Where and when do we find the truth?

To whoever said the negative comments about Genesis' Nursery Cryme in the original thread -

There are remastered CDs of all the Gabriel Genesis albums. The remastering was done at The Farm and Abbey Road by Nick Davis, Geoff Callingham and Chris Blair. They sound really good to me. Just a FYI to all early Genesis fans.

jonothan,
I might let it go through the weekend, unless my webhost starts to scream earlier. Or if everyone here starts to scream .

Shailat was kind enough to get a mastering engineer he knows to listen to these trax, but unfortunately, he's in Israel, so it will be a while before we get those results... the CD's are hurtling through the air towards him as we speak!

I voted B the ladys vocals sounded better so did the intro drums. but like sojoko Im not patiant enough to download more than 20 seconds worth. The train in B also kindof left the normal stereo field and wraped arround me. A was good but C sounded like the raw product before mastering.

Well, seems like Chessparov might prove his point...

Without knowing the results, it seems that about 50% prefer version A and 50% prefer B or C...Which proves that there is no clear winner...Which was more or less Chessparov's point....

No??
