Jimi Hendrix topped Rolling Stones magizines list of the greatest guitarists of all time.................rightfully so i might add!

there will never be another guitarist who can break that much new ground on the instrument again

Omfg, that list is so ridiculous. The lame ass guy from the White Stripes got #17 while Halen is at #70. Steve Vai isn't even on the list and some moron from Black Flag is on it! How the hell does that even make sense...?

Er, and I don't agree with Jimi being the BEST guitarist who ever lived, maybe the most creative.

theres difference in "best" and "greatest"
Jimi was the greatest
he cast the greatest shadow
had the greatest creativity
had the greatest impact on rock and roll
has the greatest "larger than life" image

Jimi saw the forest, flawless technique and chops are the trees

Obviously someone is trying to push the white stripes, just another incident of them getting more credit than they're due (i.e. any at all). The fact that Vai isn't featured is rediculous. What about anyone from Iron Maiden? Slash? As someone mentioned, greatness should be measured by impact, and certainly Iron Maiden (and other heavy metal bands of the last two decades) have inspired a generation of guitarists. It's not like these bands are obscure. SOMEONE should be included to represent. This list is absurd.

That list is a joke! No Steve Vai, no Joe Satriani, and yet Joni Mitchell ranks number 72 on the list, give me a break.

I guess it is all in what you consider when picking a list. Is it raw talent, song writing, creativity, affect on the industry. Depending on what you consider most important, you will get a different list each time.

So maybe the question here should be, what criteria should be considered and what weight to give to each catagory.

i didn't take a look at the whole list. I was just browsing in walmart and saw Jimi on the cover and saw that he topped the list and that pete townsend wrote the tribute, so, I read that and put the mag back on the rack.

It is unbelieveable that Vai and Sat. arn't on the list. Personally I would put EVH #2 on any list....he set the stage for a whole new style of guitar (including Vai and Sat).

I haven't seen the list....
Did Chuck Barry get in the top 20??

chuck should be up there

i mean geez, what kind of list would it be without him

and i am once again disapointed with all these "top" lists.....no one ever puts me on there.

freak

Heh, I'm glad people are agreeing with me. (Maiden rocks by the way). Chuck Barry made the top 5 (#3 I think). The top 5 weren't THAT bad, Clapton made it, as did Barry.

Was John McGlaughlin on the list?

Was Frank Zappa?

Was Django?

Was Scofield?

Zappa said that rating guitarists was a piss poor hobby.

Anyway, I know the greatest living guitarist. He lives in my neighborhood and has no fame at all, which is very sad.

:(

Carl

Zappa was #45
McLaughlin was #49
Chuck Berry was #6
No Django or Scofield

The poll wasn't "most influential" guitarist or "most well known" guitarist, it was "greatest" guitarist. To exclude Vai, Satriani, Steve Morse, Scofield, Mathini, Django or even Doc Watson and Chet Atkins is just insane. I mean, these are technical giants who are both known and influential. This poll was garbage, garbage, garbage!

Rolling Stone should've have advertised on the cover "100 greatest guitarist!" , Then when you get to the page it's labled 1 to 100, but you have to fill it in.

:)

Where's a link to the list?
If Bo Diddley aint in the top 5 it's just bunk.

That shit looks random as hell.

Carl

This list is about as ridiculous as any other list would be, even if it had the right guy at the top, and all the guys you know in it. Music is not competition, if you want a score and know who's best, go watch a boring sports-show.

Musicians get good, but not better than anyone else. If you're making lists like these, you're a REAL bad musician, cause you've got NO IDEA what music is about. Bah!

(LOL)
I knew it was just a matter of time before the world admitted
Ike Turner was "Greater" than Randy Rhoads, David Gilmour and Eddie Van Halen!

How high does someone have to be to suggest Joan Jett should rank lower than Angus Young???!!!

Does this issue of Rolling Stone come with crack or do you have to buy it seperate?

This is an obvious attempt to draw attention back to the magazine if not to sell next months issue just to read the letters to it's editors.

:)
