The future of studio's???

Why is this so scary? It still takes good engineers with good ears to make a good recording.

Just because you can DIY dosn't mean everyone is going to DIY.

You can build your own house, my parents did, I can, but I'm more likely to hire a crew todo it for me because its faster. Also most people can't so they hire someone else todo it.

I think we are soon going to see the end to big budget studios and we are going to see alot of smaller studios because the gear is now afordable.

Recordings should be seen as advertising not a source of revenu. With CD quality music people seem to have forgotten what live music is all about. The only live music around here is there for one reason these days, selling beer.

Music is one weird industry, its where advertising became the product.
 
That article is full of bullshit!

This part is pretty telling -- "These 4 track machines made the PortaStudios of today look like fucking space stations."

This Alex Botten must be a moron if he thinks that the cheap and lowly PortaStudio is in any way CLOSE to the high-end, analog 4-track EMI recorders they used on Sergeant Pepper....

Apparently, they just let ANYONE write articles on the web these days... :rolleyes:

did you guys go to the other pages at his site....not only are DIY studios in mass abundance, so is crack cocaine.....

they're the exception, tho...not the rule...and the songs were so good it covered.

But they don't do that anymore either.

If this guy thinks headphones are a microphone,hopefully he is too stupid to figure out where to put his dick,and maybe he won't fuck up the gene pool anymore!
 
I found this amusing, not scary. This guy really does have his head up his ass. You have to do a little more than "crank the gain as loud as you can without distorting" and "sing into headphones" to get a decent recording. If anything this advice is for experimentation, and it's damn shitty advice too.

I noticed that the "site" was in the UK. Over "thar" where they drink warm beer and do not use ice in drinks.

I used to post on a UK site; but, they don't allow free speech and the site monitors used to remove my comments or not print them. It was a hi-fi site and I guess they didn't like the products I mentioned. Also, they didn't like my handle: Green Hornet!!!!

So, I finally sent a "going away" message and never more returned, quoth the Raven?

UK collective sites tend to be rather snooty.

The silliest thing on that whole site is the article "Chicks (don't) dig Guitars" Thats very wrong. Chicks totally dig guitars. Maybe chicks don't dig ugly ass guys even if they play guitars...

If not, I think that the guys problem can be summed up in his statement:

just turn your headphones up to ear damaging levels

If this is standard technique of his, then obviously this character has deafened himself over the years by blowing out his eardrums and probably wouldn't know a good recording if he heard one.

His next article will probably be: "DIY Mastering with Real Audio Player"

Hey! Don't tar us all with the same brush! I know plenty of americans who are stupid too! :) I don't agree with that free speech thing and I don't think it's down to where you come from.

As for UK sites being snooty I think yes, Hi-fi sites are in general snooty, they think they know so much but they're not interested in music usually, it's the pursuit of the most exspensive gear and how they can brag to their mates down at the club that they've got a 'Naim' this and a 'Harmann' that...
 
Its good to see the replies to the article that have occured so far.

While its entirely possible to record a "damn good" demo tape on a cheesy 4-track, what makes that possible (regardless of technology used) is taste, experience, knowledge, and technique.

A 25 year veteren of the recording industry could mix a supurb demo on an ordinary fostex $99 4-track.

In contrast, a chimp would do a lousy job running a Sony DMX with full automation :)

While better technology (and more of it) gives more flexibility, options over a low-buck solution, the end result is based on the experience of the engineer/producer.

Exactly my thoughts..... I think this man knows nothing about recording... Those machines of yesteryear were great..Very big though...

I bet those same machines from Seargent Peppers are still recording today *somewhwere*.. (maybe just a vintage collectors studio or something..)

Tascam 4 track port a studio's have a shelf life of 2-4 years (regular use)... trust me, I've been through 2 of them since 1996 (i use them for writing songs..)

whatever everyone else thinks...to me this is semi-true. Studios are hella expensive....and me and my 3 good friends run our studio out of my basement....the most DIY you've probably ever seen. Unless we HAVE to buy it, we pretty much dont. but nevertheless - it sounds terrific to me, and so far everyone who's recorded here (friends bands, etc.) has loved the results as well.
 
theres no question that DIY's can get good results.....the singing into the headphones crap and all that sometimes is a must in a DIY situation....ive seen a drummer in a club micing his kick with a 6x9 car speaker.....all fun shit.....

but to even fathom that DIY'ers will put pro studios out of business is beyond nonsense.......
