Hail !!!

I will buy a HD and i want to know what is the fastest IDE (and secure)... well... i know it must be 7200 RPM Ultra ATA 66 (I got a Asus P3C2000)... but:

Maxtor ? Seagate ? Western Digital ? Quantum ? Wich one ?

Thanks !!!

Sleet!! (Sorry, couldn't resist, :D)

Look at the specs for a general idea but don't always believe what they say, then check out sites like Pcmag.com, winmag.com, cnet.com, etc. They probably have some benchmark tests for just about any computer category you are looking for. Their archives probably have some drive benchmark results if you are looking for hard evidence on which drives are the fastest.

I use Maxtor DiamondMax 7200 RPM drives, mainly because they are fast and cheap. I wouldn't say they are the best or fastest without looking up some tests, but I think they are a good vaule for the price. I have two of them and so far they are reliable. I've had good luck with Western Digital IDE drives as well. On the other hand, I've had two Seagate drives bomb out on me within a year each. Just my experiences though.

Any of those 4 brands will work for what you want. I use a Maxtor 40 gig for recording, with a Western Digital 8 gig drive as master (holds all programs and boots the system). Make sure your motherboard can handle Ultra 66 - although the drives are supposed to be backward compatible, I could not get the Maxtor drive to work until I upgraded to a motherboard with a U66 controller.

Alas, you can't even trust those. The benchmarks use a specific method to test the drives. I've heard rumor of WD drives that performed extremely well using a particular benchmark, but the same drive didn't get nearly the same results once a newer version of the benchmark was finished. Not to suggest that drive manufacturers would make drives to purposely skew the benchmarks, but...

Really thanks all of you...

Well... i got a 5400 RPM 17 giga Seagate Ultra ATA 66... and yes, my motherboard accept Ultra ATA 66....

I must buy a 7200 Maxtor.... maybe 20 Giga... well....
What is better ?
I make a 5 gig for boot, windows etc. and use the rest 15 giga of my 7200 to Cakewalk wavedata and my 5400 HD for the rest (finished songs, other documents)... with that my boot will be faster... but i don't know if cakewalk slower

The other option is keep my 5400 as boot and my 7200 just wavedata...... well....

Wich case brings more advantages ?

PS: WHAT IS "SLEET" ? :)

You started your first post with Hail (frozen chunks of ice) he countered with Sleet (freezing rain) get it?

Hehehhe.... got it ! :)

Thanx !

Living and learning english... :)

Use your 5400 drive as the Master drive (C :), put your operating system and all programs on it. Use your 7200 slave drive strictly for recording audio tracks. Depending on your motherboard & CD drive configuration you may even want to have them on seperate controllers, but that is not necessary.
